Description

3 lecture hours and 3 lab hours per week; 96 total contact hours.  Credit: 4 semester hours.

Advanced topics in Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW). Includes welding in various positions and directions.

Requisites

Prerequisites: WLDG 1425

Course Requirements

Internet access: E campus evaluations

Completion of learning outcomes, homework assignments, and course projects. This will require access to the internet which will enable you to log into the E campus Portal at Blinn college.

Quizzes will be given and assessed in E campus throughout the semester.

National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) Curriculum, Welding Level 3, 5th Edition, Module 29302 and 29303.

Students will be examined on each of these two modules. Students must receive a 70 for a passing grade.

Flux cored Arc Welding - Pipe

· Prepare GMAW equipment for open-root V-groove pipe welds.

Criteria

Practical

Students will be able to demonstrate proficiency in various welding positions; describe safety practices and equipment use; and describe the effects of welding parameters in GMAW. Students must be able to  weld various join designs and perform appropriate inspection. 

By the end of this course students must be able to:

1. Demonstrate competency for multi-pass fillet welds on plate, using solid and composite wire and shielding gas in multiples positions

2. Complete multi-pass open-root V-groove welds on pipe, using solid wire and shielding gas, in multiple positions

3. Complete GMAW open-root V-groove pipe welds using solid or composite wire and shielding gas, in flat and horizontal positions.

4. Complete FCAW open-root V-groove pipe welds in overhead positions using flux cored wire and, if required, shielding gas

5. Complete FCAW multi-pass open-root V-groove pipe welds using solid or composite wire and, if required, shielding gas in a 5G and 6G positions.

eCampus:

Access to the Internet is required. Internet access at home would certainly be a plus, however, all students at Blinn College have computing resources available to them. The Open Computer Labs at Blinn College are located in Rooms H-225 and L-258, and the Library. If you are not familiar with these, see me or inquire at the Learning Center in the Library Building, Room 258, for more details, ASAP. eCampus is an online course tool. It is in essence a virtual classroom through which I will be posting course related materials and information. You will also be able to contact me with questions and or problems you might be having and have the ability to contact your classmates. It will be your responsibility to check this site regularly: https://ecampus.blinn.edu.

Adhere to all safety rules in compliance with Blinn College, (Occupational Safety and Health Organization) OSHA, and the rules and regulations as outlined by instructors for any and all lab activities. Have appropriate text books and items for taking notes during lecture hours.

Dress Code:

1. Classroom

a. No tank tops or shorts

b. Must wear long pants

c. No baggy clothing

2. Welding Lab Dress Code

a. Long sleeve cotton shirts or approved welding jackets

b. Long cotton pants (jeans), no holes

c. OSHA approved safety glasses

d. Welding cap

e. Welding gloves

f. Welding hood

g. Leather work boots with at least 8” tops (safety toed boots recommended)

3. Classroom and Lab policies:

a. Eating and drinking are not allowed in classrooms or laboratories

b. Cell phones not allowed in classroom unless approved by the instructor

c. Be on time to all lecture and lab activities

d. No tobacco products

e. Must adhere to all Blinn policies for classroom and lab personal safety

f. Contact the instructor to request any additional lab time

Course Preparation:

Students are expected to be engaged during class time and to both take notes and ask questions. Students are required to complete all assignments on time. Students are expected to review and study their notes before class to reinforce what was learned during the previous class period. It is strongly recommended that students are prepared for each class and that they take notes and participate as required
