Description


A continuation of CHEM 2423. The laboratory will include a multistep synthesis as well as the use of chromatography and qualitative analysis.

Requisites

Prerequisites: CHEM 2423 with a grade of "C" or better.

Outcomes


1. Describe the use of three instrumental techniques that chemists use to identify compounds: mass spectrometry, infrared spectroscopy, NMR (1H and 13C), and UV/VIS spectroscopy.

2. Analyze the structural features that cause a compound to be aromatic, and explain how they react using benzene as an example.

3. Discuss and contrast the reactions of substituted benzenes and the methods used to synthesize compounds containing aromatic rings.

4. Compare the orientation of substitution in Electrophilic Aromatic Substitution of substituted aromatic compounds.

5. Discuss and contrast the reactions of aldehydes and ketones that undergo nucleophilic acyl substitution.

6. Relate the reactions of carbohydrates (Biomolecules) to the interrelated reactions of carbonyl compounds and alcohols.

7. Discuss and contrast the characteristics and reactions of carboxylic acids and nitriles.

8. Compare the reactions of carboxylic acid derivatives and those which undergo nucleophilic acyl substitution.

9. Discuss the acidity of the alpha-hydrogen and the reactions that occur at the alpha-carbon in substitution reactions.

10. Contrast carbonyl condensation reactions and their use for synthesizing compounds.

11. Compare the reactions of amines and heterocyclic compounds and devise an approach to synthesize these organic molecules.

12. Discuss the chemistry of amino acids, peptides and proteins.

Course Requirements


Exams

There will be 4 exams worth 100 points each given about as indicated in the attached schedule.  Each of the exams will include all of the material covered through that stage of the course, i.e., all exams are comprehensive.  The lowest of the four exams will be replaced by final grade if the student makes better on final exam than the lowest grade. Format of the exams will vary.  Make up exams will be allowed in exceptional situations at my discretion, but only if taken before the graded exam is returned to the class.

Final Exam

The final exam is comprehensive.

Laboratory Experiments

The laboratory portion of this course counts for 25% of the total course grade.  10 labs are scheduled for the semester. The lab work will be graded based upon written lab reports. The lab report format and the grading rubric will be available on e-campus under folder named “Labs”. Students must submit approved datasheets with the lab reports.  The lowest two lab grades will be dropped.  You will lose 5 points per class period for labs turned in late. There will be no makeup labs! 

Lab Final Exam

The lab final exam is based on all the labs covered during the semester. It is an open note exam. 

Quizzes

There will be a number of quizzes given during the semester.  There will be no make-up offered for quizzes. The lowest two quiz grades will be dropped

Online homework assignments

There will be 12/13 assignments. Homework will be graded on the following criteria: 1) Homework completed by deadline; 2) the assignment is complete and 3) The correct answer.  The homework is worth 50 points. If you fail to submit your homework, you will receive a grade of zero for that section. You will receive a score for each chapter assignment.  No extensions for homework under any circumstances. 

Evaluation


Grades will be posted on e-campus on % basis. E-campus grade book is not an official grade book.

Formal grading will be based upon a point system as follows:

Four Major Exams               100 points each (400 total)

Quizzes                             100 points

Laboratory Work                 150 points

Lab Finals                          100 points

Homework                          50 points

Comprehensive Final           200 points

Scholastic Integrity

Blinn College does not tolerate cheating, plagiarism, or any other act of dishonesty with regard to the course in which you are enrolled.  The following text defines the faculty member’s responsibility with regard to the scholastic integrity expectation for this and all courses at Blinn College.

It is the responsibility of faculty members to maintain scholastic integrity at the College District by refusing to tolerate any form of scholastic dishonesty.  Adequate control of test materials, strict supervision during testing, and other preventive measures should be utilized, as necessary, to prevent cheating or plagiarism.  If there is compelling evidence that a student is involved in cheating or plagiarism, the instructor should assume responsibility and address the infraction.  Likewise, any student accused of scholastic dishonesty is entitled to due process as outlined in Blinn College Board Policy FLB (Local).  The Scholastic Integrity Policy is located in the Blinn College Student Handbook. In a case of scholastic dishonesty, it is critical that written documentation be maintained at each level throughout the process.

Attendance Policy

The College District believes that class attendance is essential for student success; therefore, students are required to promptly and regularly attend all their classes. A record of attendance will be maintained from the first day of classes and/or the first day the student’s name appears on the roster through final examinations. If a student has one week’s worth of unexcused absences during the semester, he or she will be sent an e-mail by the College District requiring the student to contact his or her instructor and schedule a conference immediately to discuss his/her attendance issues. Should the student accumulate two weeks’ worth of unexcused absences, he or she will be administratively withdrawn from class.

There are four forms of excused absences recognized by the institution:

  1. observance of religious holy days—The student should notify his or her instructor(s) not later than the 15th day of the semester concerning the specific date(s) that the student will be absent for any religious holy day(s);
  2. representing the College District at an official institutional function;
  3. high school dual credit students representing the independent school district at an official institutional function; and
  4. military service.

Other absences may be considered excused at the discretion of the faculty member with appropriate documentation.  A student enrolled in a developmental course is subject to College District-mandated attendance policies. Failure to attend developmental classes shall result in removal from the course as defined by the College District.

It is the student’s responsibility to officially drop a class he or she is no longer attending.  To officially drop a class the student must obtain the class withdrawal form from Enrollment Services, complete the class withdrawal form, secure the required signatures, and return the completed form to Enrollment Services. The last day to drop with a Q is according to the Academic Calendar.

Civility Statement

Course Policies


Attendance Policy Reminder:  Missing lecture, lab or both will count as one absence.  If a student gain three days of absences during the semester, he/she will be administratively withdrawn from the class.

Problem Resolution: If you have a complaint about your class, you should first request a conference with your instructor to try and resolve the problems or issues. If the problems or issues cannot be resolved at the instructor level, you should request a conference with the Division Chair, Mr. Dwight Bohlmeyer, Science 241, dbohlmeyer@blinn.edu.

Eating and Drinking:  Eating and drinking are not allowed in classrooms orlaboratories.

 

Additional Faculty Guidelines:  

Laboratory dress policy:  (1) Closed-toe shoes must be worn, (2) Clothing must cover the skin from the neck to below the knees, (3) Shirts must have sleeves; alternatively, a lab coat / apron may be worn, (4) Students are responsible for providing their own safety goggles

Unable to present to the laboratory with proper attire will cost you an unexcused absence plus a zero grade for the lab. To avoid such a situation please leave pair of goggles, apron, and pair of proper shoes in your vehicle or in your backpack. 

Electronic devices:  You are allowed to take electronic notes. If you use electronic devices for personal activities it will cost you -5 points from the total points. 

Cell phones:  Once instructor entered into the class room or the lab, students need to stow their cell phones in backpacks. Any cell phone activities in the class room will cost -5 points from the total points. 

Personal Folder: Each student must maintain a personal folder to turn in all the material to be graded.  The folder should contain only the ungraded assignments. Make sure to write your name, class, and the section number in the front of the folder.
