Description


CHEM 2423 is a comprehensive survey of the chemistry of aliphatic and aromatic compounds including reaction mechanisms, spectroscopy and chromatography. The laboratory will involve the use of fundamental techniques of synthesis, isolation and analysis of various types of organic compounds.

Requisites

Prerequisites: CHEM 1412 with a grade of "C" or better.

Outcomes


1. Describe those topics from general chemistry important to the study of organic chemistry (structure of atoms and molecules, Lewis Dot structures, acid-base chemistry).

2. Apply the rules of nomenclature to organic compounds.

3. Classify how alkenes react.

4. Classify the different kinds of isomers possible for organic compounds, and organize reactions in relationship to the type(s) of stereoisomers produced.

5. Describe how various techniques can be used to utilize terminal alkynes to synthesize organic compounds.

6. Discuss delocalized electrons and resonance and explain how these effect acidity, molecular stability, and the outcome of organic reactions.

7. Analyze the reactions of dienes by comparing 1,2- and 1,4-additions.

8. Compare how alkanes behave under extreme conditions.

9. Discuss the substitution and elimination reactions of alkyl halides by comparing stereospecific and regiospecific outcomes and the factors that determine whether a given alkyl halide undergoes substitution, elimination, or both.

10. Summarize the reactions of alcohols and contrast these reactions to those of phenols.

11. Compare methods for the synthesis of specific alcohols.

12. Compare the reactions and synthesis of ethers, epoxides, thiols, and sulfides.

13. Contrast reactions of alcohols with those of ethers and epoxides.

Exams

Exams are a requirement.  There will be 4 exams worth 100 points each given about as indicated in the attached schedule.  Each of the exams will include all of the material covered through that stage of the course, i.e., all exams are comprehensive.  The lowest of the four exams will be replaced by final grade if the student makes better on final exam than the lowest grade. Format of the exams will vary.  Make up exams will be allowed in exceptional situations at my discretion, but only if taken before the graded exam is returned to the class.  The final exam is comprehensive and worth 200 points. 

Laboratory Experiments

Laboratory Experiments are a requirement.  The laboratory portion of this course counts for 25% of the total course grade.  10 labs are scheduled for the semester. The lab work will be graded based upon written lab reports. The lab report format and the grading rubric will be available on e-campus under folder named “Labs”. Students must submit approved datasheets with the lab reports.  The lowest two lab grades will be dropped.  You will lose 5 points per class period for labs turned in late. There will be no makeup labs!

The lab final exam is based on all the labs covered during the semester. It is an open note exam.  Lab exam is worth 100 points.

Quizzes

Quizzes are a requirement.  There will be a number of quizzes given during the semester.  There will be no make-up offered for quizzes. The lowest two quiz grades will be dropped.

Online homework assignments

Online homework assignments are a requirement. There will be 12/13 assignments. Homework will be graded on the following criteria: 1) Homework completed by deadline; 2) the assignment is complete and 3) The correct answer.  The homework is worth 50 points. If you fail to submit your homework, you will receive a grade of zero for that section. You will receive a score for each chapter assignment.  No extensions for homework under any circumstances.

Eye protection

Eye protection is a requirement.  Students are responsible for purchasing appropriate eye protection and wearing eye protection during laboratories.  Appropriate eye protection for this class will be safety goggles.

Attendance Policy

The College District believes that class attendance is essential for student success; therefore, students are required to promptly and regularly attend all their classes. A record of attendance will be maintained from the first day of classes and/or the first day the student’s name appears on the roster through final examinations. If a student has one week’s worth of unexcused absences during the semester, he or she will be sent an e-mail by the College District requiring the student to contact his or her instructor and schedule a conference immediately to discuss his/her attendance issues. Should the student accumulate two weeks’ worth of unexcused absences, he or she will be administratively withdrawn from class.

There are four forms of excused absences recognized by the institution:

  1. observance of religious holy days—The student should notify his or her instructor(s) not later than the 15th day of the semester concerning the specific date(s) that the student will be absent for any religious holy day(s);
  2. representing the College District at an official institutional function;
  3. high school dual credit students representing the independent school district at an official institutional function; and
  4. military service.

Other absences may be considered excused at the discretion of the faculty member with appropriate documentation.  A student enrolled in a developmental course is subject to College District-mandated attendance policies. Failure to attend developmental classes shall result in removal from the course as defined by the College District.

It is the student’s responsibility to officially drop a class he or she is no longer attending.  To officially drop a class the student must obtain the class withdrawal form from Enrollment Services, complete the class withdrawal form, secure the required signatures, and return the completed form to Enrollment Services. The last day to drop with a Q is according to the Academic Calendar.

Scholastic Integrity

Blinn College does not tolerate cheating, plagiarism, or any other act of dishonesty with regard to the course in which you are enrolled.  The following text defines the faculty member’s responsibility with regard to the scholastic integrity expectation for this and all courses at Blinn College.

Electronic Devices

All the functions of all personal electronic devices designed for communication and/or entertainment (cell phones, pagers, beepers, iPods, and similar devices) must be turned off and kept out of sight in all College District classrooms and associated laboratories.  Any noncompliance with this policy shall be addressed in accordance with the College District civility policy (administrative policy).  This information is contained in Blinn College Board Policy FLB (Local).

Course Policies


Attendance Policy Reminder

 Missing lecture, lab or both will count as one absence.  If a student gain three days of absences during the semester, he/she will be administratively withdrawn from the class.

Problem Resolution

If you have a complaint about your class, you should first request a conference with your instructor to try and resolve the problems or issues. If the problems or issues cannot be resolved at the instructor level, you should request a conference with the Division Chair, Mr. Dwight Bohlmeyer, Science 241, dbohlmeyer@blinn.edu.

Food and Drinks

 Eating and drinking are not allowed in classrooms or laboratories

Laboratory dress policy

 (1) Closed-toe shoes must be worn, (2) Clothing must cover the skin from the neck to below the knees, (3) Shirts must have sleeves; alternatively, a lab coat / apron may be worn, (4) Students are responsible for providing their own safety goggles

Unable to present to the laboratory with proper attire will cost you an unexcused absence plus a zero grade for the lab. To avoid such a situation please leave pair of goggles, apron, and pair of proper shoes in your vehicle or in your backpack. 

Electronic devices

You are allowed to take electronic notes. If you use electronic devices for personal activities it will cost you -5 points from the total points. 

Cell phones

 Once instructor entered into the class room or the lab, students need to stow their cell phones in backpacks. Any cell phone activities in the class room will cost -5 points from the total points. 

Personal Folder

Each student must maintain a personal folder to turn in all the material to be graded.  The folder should contain only the ungraded assignments. Make sure to write your name, class, and the section number in the front of the folder.
