Description


A chronological analysis of the historical and cultural contexts of the visual arts from prehistoric times to the 14th century.

3 class hours per week; 48 total contact hours. Credit: 3 semester hours.

Requisites

Prerequisites: Students must be college ready in reading, by means of appropriate exemption score by TSI or alternative test; or by completing READ 0306, or READ 0307, or DIRW 0326, or ESOL 0325 with a C or better, or by completing READ 0208 or ESOL 0226 with a passing grade.

Outcomes


Identify and describe works of art based on their chronology and style, using standard categories and terminology.

Investigate major artistic developments and significant works of art from prehistoric times to the 14th century.

Analyze the relationship of art to history by placing works of art within cultural, historical, and chronological contexts.

Critically interpret and evaluate works of art.

Materials


Materials: Kleiner, Fred and Mamiya, Christin. Gardner's Art Through the Ages: The Western Perspective. Volume I, 15th Edition. Prentice Hall. Additional materials, such as course packets, articles, or other materials as determined by instructor.

Do not purchase a textbook with a similar title that is : A Global History, this is not the correct textbook.

Students will need a textbook for this course. The textbook ISBN# differs depending on where the textbook is purchased, the Blinn bookstore has plenty of copies for students on hand. Used copies/older editions of the textbook are fine. I suggest purchasing a hard copy of the text so you can use it for your proctored exams which are open/book notes-no digital copies will be allowed.

Please Note: Students are not required to purchase a new textbook. The publisher offers access to an online companion site, Mind Tap, however this course does not use it so I do not have a code for you to access the publisher's companion site Mind Tap, all required course content outside of the textbook can be found on eCampus which students will have access to once the course begins.

Course Requirements


Students will be expected to attend all classes (or enter on-line sites), purchase books, packets and instruments as indicated by instructor, take quizzes and tests, participate in class as individual or in group discussions, write short and long essays describing, interpreting, analyzing, comparing art, and drawing conclusions pertaining to different art periods or artists, submit typed assignments, and take a comprehensive final exam.

Students will need to download associated browsers to take exams on their own computers. Exams may consist of essay, multiple choice, matching, true/false, or short answer.

Students will receive grades directly after completion of exams as they are computer graded.

QUIZZES

There are a total of 17 quizzes made up of  a syllabus quiz, chapter quizzes, and the review quiz. In addition to the textbook the best resources for your quizzes can be found in the modules that cover the chapter material located in your eCampus class.  

All quizzes will be taken online and will be open for 1 week until the close date. There will be no makeup of quizzes without a legitimate reason. Chapter quizzes are worth 10 points each, the syllabus quiz worth is 30 points, and the final review quiz is worth 20 points for a total of 200 points.

Students will receive grades directly after completion of quizzes as they are computer graded.

WRITTEN ASSIGNMENTS/PRESENTATION

Students will be assigned 3 essays and a power point presentation during the semester, totaled together these  are worth 200 points.

Grades will be available to view after 2 weeks of submitting work, feedback will be given in the "comments" section next the grade.

In addition to the written assignments listed below students are assigned chapter readings each week of the semester from the textbook.

Essay 1 = 2.5%  25pts

FINAL EXAM

Attention! The Final Exam in this course is proctored. Students may choose to use ProctorU an online proctoring service for a fee, students will need access to a computer with a camera and a photo I.D. Alternately students may use the Learning Center on campus free of charge for their proctored exams.

The final exam is to be taken online and may be available to be taken from your own computer. This exam may consist of essay, multiple choice, matching, true/false, or short answer. This exam focuses on chapters 11, 12, & 13 of the textbook, but covers material from the other chapters as well making it comprehensive.

Students will receive grades within a few days of taking the final exam, they will be able to view their grades in the gradebook on ecampus.

Class Participation 10%

CLASS PARTICIPATION

Class participation is determined by the completion and quality of discussion posts and is worth 100 points. To receive full credit for discussion posts, you must complete all requirements for each discussion assignment. You are also encouraged to view the lecture videos, links, and other material posted each weeks module.

At the end of the semester the instructor will evaluate if the student has participated in discussions on related topics. This grade will not be evaluated until the end of the semester.

Course Policies


Attendance

Regular attendance is required or you will be administratively dropped from the course. To be counted as "Present" you must participate in the weekly discussions. For the summer semester you are required to log into the course at least 5 days per 7 day week and complete associated assignments, (discussion posts & other assignments). Details can be found in the course assignments. Additionally you need to complete all assignments for the week (including quizzes, essays, discussions, homework assignments, exams).

The Blinn College policy states that, an excess of 2 missed days, (Summer Semester) of unexcused absences will result in the student being dropped from the course. Therefore, if you log in less than 5 days in a week and do not complete the required assignments associated with class attendance, you will be dropped from the course. Logging in alone does not constitute attendance, students must complete discussion forum posts, (specific instructions for posts found in course), on 5 separate days in order to be counted present for the week.

It is your responsibility to contact me as soon as possible should you have any problems completing any assignments or if you have a request for an excused absence. 

You are only allowed 2 total unexcused absences, so should you fail to be counted as present it will count as an unexcused absence. If you should accumulate 2 unexcused absences you will be administratively dropped from the course for excessive absences.

Civility

Students are expected to be polite at all times when interacting with the instructor and classmates both in the course, through emails, and on the phone.

Being civil in an online class means both being civil in discussions when responding to other students and the instructor and being honest when taking exams and completing homework assignments. Rude and inappropriate comments posted to discussions may be removed by the instructor and may result in a zero on the assignment or other repercussions. Dropping

If a student chooses to drop the course, it is that student’s responsibility to complete a drop order at the Office of Enrollment Services. Failure to do so could result in a grade F in the course. The last day to drop with a “Q” is June 21st. If a student drops or is dropped after that date, an automatic QF is assigned. Note that a “QF” is calculated the same as an “F” in grade point average. Please check to make sure your status is a “Q” if you are not finishing the class and do not wait until the last minute to drop. It is important that students take responsibility for dropping the class before this deadline.

Proctored Exams

For proctored exams will need to download associated browsers if they choose to take proctored exams from their own computers, a fee will be associated with taking exams, (see ProctorU site for pricing). Alternately students may take their proctored exams free of charge at the Learning Center.  

Technical Issues

Due to the nature of an online class it is the students’ responsibility to allow for plenty of time to complete assignments in case there are technical issues. If students run into technical issues they should email the instructor to let them know there was an issue as soon as possible. Technical problems do not automatically mean students will be granted an opportunity to complete work, they should email the instructor to discuss options.

They may also connect with Blinn to answer questions by going to: http://ask.blinn.edu/ and submit a question. If it is a student technical issue they should try and resolve it by using the provided resources first and then email their instructor.

Late Work

All assignments are expected to be turned in on time. Late assignments are not accepted without penalty unless the student and the instructor agree on a different due date in advance of the original due date. The late penalty is the lowering of one letter grade per day. 

Computer problems are not an excuse for late work. Computers are available at the computer labs in Bryan and Brenham, and in the libraries on all campuses. If you have computer problems, you should let the instructor know. Late quizzes and exams are not accepted without a valid reason. After the last day of class no assignments aside from the final exam will be accepted.

Make-up quizzes and exams

There will be no makeup of quizzes or exams without an authorized excuse or instructor permission. Quizzes are online for one week. If you are sick or have a valid reason for not completing a quiz on time, you must contact the instructor. Exams are also online for 7 days. Students should contact the instructor before the exam deadline to request an extension. Extensions for exams are not automatically granted and may be made up only with the instructor’s permission. If in doubt about the validity of your excuse, please contact the instructor anyway.

Grades

Students can expect to see grades posted within two weeks of the submission deadline for a written assignment. All quizzes and exams taken online will automatically be graded and added to the students’ gradebook.
