Description


A continuation of the principles of structure and function of the human body. Anatomy and Physiology II is the second course in a two semester sequence which examines the systems of the human body using an integrated approach. The major areas of study will be those not covered in Anatomy and Physiology I including the general senses, endocrine system, cardiovascular system, lymphatic and immune systems, respiratory system, digestive system, urinary system and reproductive system. Laboratory exercises are to enhance the students' appreciation and comprehension of the biological concepts of the structure and function of the human body.

Requisites

Prerequisites: Biology 2401 or approval of the division chair on the relevant campus.

Core Curriculum Statement


This course is not a core curriculum course.

Outcomes


1. Use correct anatomical and physiological terms to describe the human body.

2. Describe homeostasis and feedback mechanisms pertaining to the human body.

3. Describe the histology and anatomy of organ systems of the human body.

4. Identify and explain the physiological processes underlying organ systems of the human body, and describe their interrelationships.

5. Demonstrate basic dissection techniques, perform various lab experiments, and be able to operate compound microscopes.

Textbook: Anatomy Physiology-The Unity of Form and Function, 6th Edition, 2012, Saladin, McGraw-Hill.

Lab Manual: Custom Lab Book A&P (BIOL 2401& 2402), 2012 Edition, Martin. McGraw-Hill.

Other: McGraw-Hill “connect”, a learning platform for which I have set up a website specific to your class.  The access code which allows you to register is included in the price of each new textbook, but a 6 month access code can also be purchased online for $25

Course Requirements


Lecture Exams

You will need 4 Advantage scantrons (#28980) for the lecture exams, 1 for each.  The 4 Lecture Exams can include both objective (multiple choice) or short answer questions and labeling of figures.  More will be specified in class and in the reviews posted on ecampus.  Lecture Exams can be made up with instructor approval, and will require written verification of excuse.

 

Lab Exams

Lab exams will not require a scantron.  The 4 lab exams will include identification of microscope specimens & anatomical structures, and questions about their function.  Tissues, cells and structures may be presented in preserved specimens, models, microscope slides, or pictures.  It may also include questions that require you to analyze and interpret scientific data or answer objective questions over experiments performed.  More will be specified in class and in the reviews posted on ecampus.  Lab Exams cannot be made up except under exceptional circumstances and only if the student can attend the exam in one of my other sections.

 

Final Exam

You will need 1 Advantage scantron (#28980) for the Final Exam.  The comprehensive final will include all chapters covered during the semester and will be given during Final’s Week, as specified in the Final Exam Calendar found in this syllabus and also on the Blinn web page.

 

Quizzes

Quizzes will be announce in class, 1-2 class periods before being given and will also be announced on ecampus.  You will need Advantage scantrons (#28980) for “paper” quizzes; each scantron will be used for up to 4 quizzes.  “Paper” quizzes may be given during the lecture or lab period and will cover material from the “connect” McGraw-Hill learning platform which has been set up online for your class (including figures from “Interactive Art Quizzes found under “Study Tools” and assigned “practice quizzes”) or material presented in lecture.  Three to four of your quiz grades will come from assigned “Learn Smart” homeworks which you can also find on the “connect” website.  Percent completion will be used to determine the LearnSmart grade (90% completion = 9 point out of 10 for that grade).  Quizzes may also be given online through the “connect” website.  They will be announced on the connect site, in class and in the ecampus calendar.  No make-up quizzes will be given, but you will be able to drop the lowest 2.

Lab Work

In-lab assignments will be due at the end of the lab period.  Lab homework will be due the next lab period, unless otherwise specified & can be turned in up to a week late, but a late penalty of 25% will be deducted.  Some lab work may be evaluated in a quiz format.  Labs cannot be made up, but you can drop the lowest 2.  Only those who attend lab and sign the “Lab Attendance Sheet” can turn in either type of lab assignment for a grade.

Attendance Policy

The College District believes that class attendance is essential for student success; therefore, students are required to promptly and regularly attend all their classes. A record of attendance will be maintained from the first day of classes and/or the first day the student’s name appears on the roster through final examinations. If a student has one week’s worth of unexcused absences during the semester, he or she will be sent an e-mail by the College District requiring the student to contact his or her instructor and schedule a conference immediately to discuss his/her attendance issues. Should the student accumulate two weeks’ worth of unexcused absences, he or she will be administratively withdrawn from class.

There are four forms of excused absences recognized by the institution:

  1. observance of religious holy days—The student should notify his or her instructor(s) not later than the 15th day of the semester concerning the specific date(s) that the student will be absent for any religious holy day(s);
  2. representing the College District at an official institutional function;
  3. high school dual credit students representing the independent school district at an official institutional function; and
  4. military service.

Other absences may be considered excused at the discretion of the faculty

member with appropriate documentation.  A student enrolled in a developmental course is subject to College District-mandated attendance policies. Failure to attend developmental classes shall result in removal from the course as defined by the College District.

It is the student’s responsibility to officially drop a class he or she is no longer attending.  To officially drop a class the student must obtain the class withdrawal form from Enrollment Services, complete the class withdrawal form, secure the required signatures, and return the completed form to Enrollment Services. The last day to drop with a Q is according to the Academic Calendar.

Scholastic Integrity

Blinn College does not tolerate cheating, plagiarism, or any other act of dishonesty with regard to the course in which you are enrolled.  The following text defines the faculty member’s responsibility with regard to the scholastic integrity expectation for this and all courses at Blinn College.

It is the responsibility of faculty members to maintain scholastic integrity at the College District by refusing to tolerate any form of scholastic dishonesty.  Adequate control of test materials, strict supervision during testing, and other preventive measures should be utilized, as necessary, to prevent cheating or plagiarism.  If there is compelling evidence that a student is involved in cheating or plagiarism, the instructor should assume responsibility and address the infraction.  Likewise, any student accused of scholastic dishonesty is entitled to due process as outlined in Blinn College Board Policy FLB (Local).  The Scholastic Integrity Policy is located in the Blinn College Student Handbook, www.blinn.edu/student%20handbook.pdf.  In a case of scholastic dishonesty, it is critical that written documentation be maintained at each level throughout the process.

All the functions of all personal electronic devices designed for communication and/or entertainment (cell phones, pagers, beepers, iPods, and similar devices) must be turned off and kept out of sight in all College District classrooms and associated laboratories.  Any noncompliance with this policy shall be addressed in accordance with the College District civility policy (administrative policy).  This information is contained in Blinn College Board Policy FLB (Local).

Course Policies


Attendance Policy Reminder:  Missing lecture, lab or both will count as one absence.  For classes that meet twice a week during the spring semester two absences counts as one week's absence.  Students accumulating two week’s worth of absences (four unexcused absences) will be dropped.

Problem Resolution: If you have a complaint about your class, you should first request a conference with your instructor to try and resolve the problems or issues. If the problems or issues cannot be resolved at the instructor level, you should request a conference with the Division Chair, Mr. Dwight Bohlmeyer, Science 241, dbohlmeyer@blinn.edu.
