A course primarily designed for students preparing for careers in architecture, biology, medicine, pharmacy and other fields requiring two semesters of physics. Topics covered include fundamentals of classical mechanics, heat and sound.
Prerequisites: A grade of "C" or better in MATH 1316 or MATH 1325, or any sophomore (2000level or higher) Math class."
This is a Core Course in the 42Hour Core Curriculum of Blinn College. As such, students will develop proficiency in the appropriate Intellectual Competencies, Exemplary Educational Objectives, and Perspectives.
1. Apply the equations of kinematics for objects moving with constant acceleration in one and two dimensions.
2. Use vectors in solving physics problems.
3. Apply Newton's laws of motion to one and twodimensional linear dynamics problems.
4. Utilize the definition of work, the workenergy theorem and the principle of conservation of energy in solving physics problems.
5. Apply the principle of conservation of linear momentum.
6. Apply the equations of rotational kinematics for objects rotating with constant angular acceleration.
7. Apply the equations of rotational dynamics, including the principle of conservation of angular momentum.
8. Utilize principles such as Newton's law of universal gravitation, conservation of energy or Kepler's laws to solve problems in gravitation.
9. Describe selected properties of oscillations and waves.
10. Distinguish between the concepts of heat and temperature. Use the concept of specific heat in solving problems in calorimetry.
11. Apply the concept of latent heat to problems involving phase changes. Describe various properties of ideal gases.
12. Recognize, explain and apply the laws of thermodynamics.

Laboratory Manual: Physics 1401 Laboratory Manual. Available at the copy center on the first floor of the Bookstore Building on the Blinn campus.
Scientific Calculator: Nonprogrammable (nongraphing) scientific calculator. Examples of acceptable calculators include the TI 30, TI34, TI36, and the Casio FX250, FX260, and FX300.
Grades will be based on exams, labs, and quizzes.
All exams will be closedbook and closednote exams. Exams will be partially multiple choice and partially free response ("showyourwork"). For any question in which you must do some calculation to get an answer, you must show your work in doing the calculation in order to receive credit.
There will be a lab exercise approximately once per week. Students' lowest lab grade will be dropped.
Approximately 510 quizzes will be given. Most of these will be group quizzes or takehome quizzes and will be announced in advance. Group quizzes are inclass, timed quizzes that you work on with the members of your lab group. On group quizzes, you may use your class notes, but not the textbook. On takehome quizzes, you may use any resources. In addition, there could be unannounced quizzes. These are quizzes that you work on individually and that are, of course, not announced in advance.
Students' lowest quiz score will be dropped.
The grading system of Blinn College is as follows*:
A = 90 – 100 Superior
B = 80 – 89 Above Average
C = 70 – 79 Average
D = 60 – 69 Passing
F = < 60 Failing

The College District believes that class attendance is essential for student success; therefore, students are required to promptly and regularly attend all their classes. A record of attendance will be maintained from the first day of classes and/or the first day the student’s name appears on the roster through final examinations. If a student has one week’s worth of unexcused absences during the semester, he or she will be sent an email by the College District requiring the student to contact his or her instructor and schedule a conference immediately to discuss his/her attendance issues. Should the student accumulate two weeks’ worth of unexcused absences, he or she will be administratively withdrawn from class.

member with appropriate documentation. A student enrolled in a developmental course is subject to College Districtmandated attendance policies. Failure to attend developmental classes shall result in removal from the course as defined by the College District.
It is the student’s responsibility to officially drop a class he or she is no longer attending. To officially drop a class the student must obtain the class withdrawal form from Enrollment Services, complete the class withdrawal form, secure the required signatures, and return the completed form to Enrollment Services. The last day to drop with a Q is according to the Academic Calendar.
Blinn College does not tolerate cheating, plagiarism, or any other act of dishonesty with regard to the course in which you are enrolled. The following text defines the faculty member’s responsibility with regard to the scholastic integrity expectation for this and all courses at Blinn College.
It is the responsibility of faculty members to maintain scholastic integrity at the College District by refusing to tolerate any form of scholastic dishonesty. Adequate control of test materials, strict supervision during testing, and other preventive measures should be utilized, as necessary, to prevent cheating or plagiarism. If there is compelling evidence that a student is involved in cheating or plagiarism, the instructor should assume responsibility and address the infraction. All the functions of all personal electronic devices designed for communication and/or entertainment (cell phones, pagers, beepers, iPods, and similar devices) must be turned off and kept out of sight in all College District classrooms and associated laboratories. Any noncompliance with this policy shall be addressed in accordance with the College District civility policy (administrative policy). Students will not be permitted to make up missed work except in rare circumstances. Before any makeups are permitted, students must provide the instructor with appropriate documentation. Permission to make up work will be granted solely at the discretion of the instructor.
Except for a few circumstances, you will have only one lab period in which to work on the laboratory experiments. Additional class time for working on these experiments will be given solely at the discretion of the instructor. This means that when you are working through the experiments, you should focus on making sure you have made all the required measurements and have recorded all the required data. Only after this is completed should you spend class time working through calculations called for in the experiment. If you do not complete the calculations in class, I expect you to complete them outside of class.
You may hand in labs at any time up until the time I begin grading them. However, once I start grading them, I will not accept any additional labs.
Missing lecture or lab counts as one absence. Missing both lecture and lab periods for a given day counts as only one absence. Two absences counts as one week of absences. Students accumulating two weeks of unexcused absences (four unexcused absences) will be dropped.
If you have a complaint about your class, you should first request a conference with your instructor to try to resolve the problems or issues. If the problems or issues cannot be resolved at the instructor level, you should request a conference with the Divison Chair, Mr. Dwight Bohlmeyer, Science 241, dbohlmeyer@blinn.edu.
