General Chemistry II CHEM-1412

CHEM 1412 consists of the study of the fundamental laws, theories and concepts of chemistry including oxidation-reduction reactions, electrochemistry, thermodynamics, chemical equilibria, nuclear and organic chemistry.
Prerequisites: MATH 1314 or its equivalent, CHEM 1410 or CHEM 1411 with a grade of "C" or better.
This is a Core Course in the 42-Hour Core Curriculum of Blinn College. As such, students will develop proficiency in the appropriate Intellectual Competencies, Exemplary Educational Objectives, and Perspectives.
1. State the characteristics of liquids and solids, including phase diagrams and spectrometry.
2. Articulate the importance of intermolecular interactions and predict trends in physical properties.
3. Identify the characteristics of acids, bases, and salts, and solve problems based on their quantitative relationships.
4. Identify and balance oxidation-reduction equations, and solve redox titration problems.
5. Determine the rate of a reaction and its dependence on concentration, time, and temperature.
6. Apply the principles of equilibrium to aqueous systems using LeChateliers Principle to predict the effects of concentration, pressure, and temperature changes on equilibrium mixtures.
7. Analyze and perform calculations with the thermodynamic functions, enthalpy, entropy, and free energy.
8. Discuss the construction and operation of galvanic and electrolytic electrochemical cells, and determine standard and non-standard cell potentials.
9. Define nuclear decay processes.
10. Describe basic principles of organic chemistry and descriptive inorganic chemistry.

This coursecovers Chapters 11-17, 20, 22, and 23 in the textbook Chemistry, 6th edition by McMurry and Fay, Pearson/Prentiss Hall Publishing. The following are the course requirements:
a.Attendance is required. Blinn College believes that class attendance is essential for student success. Yes, I will take roll. Therefore, students are expected to report promptly and regularly to all their classes. The attendance policy is outlined in section 10b. Please refer to that section for any matter concerning attendance. Remember, you must attend all labs; any absence in the lab counts as one day absence, as well. There has been much discussion about the flu lately. If you think that you have the flu, please notify me, and don’t come to class. However, you need to inform me via email as soon as possible that you are about to miss, or have missed a class.
b. Homework is a requirement. There will be 4 assignments, corresponding to exams 1 through 4, due during this semester, each worth 25 points, for a total 100 points. I will allow you to rework these problems once the exam is taken by you .This will be worth 10% of your grade. The Homework collection and grading will be handled by the Mastering Chemistry system. A code must be purchased in order to access this system. Further instructions are given at the website http://masteringchemistry.com. Homework will be based on the following criteria: (1) Homework is turned in on time, (2) The assignment is complete, and (3) The answers are correct. N.B. The Course ID for this class is GALLEGOS1412SPRING309
c. Exams are a requirement. There will be 4 Lecture exams given on the days indicated in the course schedule; refer to section 11 for the schedule. There will be a 5th Optional Comprehensive exam to be given on the last class day. This exam is meant to be a review exam, meaning that I consider this exam to be a good review for the final. I will give you the key to this exam, along with the worked out solutions in order to help you study for the final exam. You do not have to take the comprehensive 5th exam. However, if you do take the exam, and you score well enough on it, you may replace your lowest exam score from the first 4 exams. In other words, if you take all 5 exams, I will count your top 4 Exam grades. Each exam will be worth 100 points. These exams may have a combination of multiple-choice questions that will be machine-graded and non-multiple-choice questions that will be hand-graded. In fact, in all likelihood, the first three exams will be either work out only exams or exams that are half work out problems and half multiple-choice, fill in the blank, short answer, etc. The last two exams will be multiple-choice only. This is to give you a good idea of how the final exam will be, as the final exam is always multiple-choice. Regular exams amount to 400 points or 40% of the total final grade. Please note:
All exams (and quizzes) are closed-book . No notes may be used on exams. All necessary information will be supplied to the student. Should you miss an exam, you will be allowed to make it up, assuming that you have a valid excuse. However, all make-up exams will be work-out problems only. As well, on all exams, including the final, there will be special rules in order to insure fairness: Please use the restroom before the exam. If you must leave the room for some reason, you must turn in your exam, and you will not be allowed to come back to the room. Thus, restroom breaks are not allowed on an exam or quiz. When taking a quiz or exam, you must place all personal belongings off your desk. You cannot use your cell phone during your exam. If you miss an exam, you must make it up within 5 school days; otherwise you will not be allowed to make it up, regardless of the excuse.
d. Bonus Quizzes are a requirement (But they are a bonus!). Several opportunities will be given during the course of the semester to obtain quiz credit. You will have at least 8 scheduled bonus quizzes, each worth 20 pts. I will take the five highest quiz scores as your quiz grade. All of these quizzes will be individual effort. Remember, these quizzes are Bonus, meaning that the maximum 100 pts will be added to your final grade tally (see Grading Criteria, section 9). You will receive a key to each quiz after you have taken the quiz. If you miss a Bonus Quiz for whatever the reason, you will not be able to make the quiz up (because these are bonus only).
e. Laboratory experiments are required. The laboratory portion of this course counts for 20% or 200 points of this course. For each experiment you will receive a score between 0 and 20 (20 pts max.). The lab report must reflect information obtained by you while in the laboratory and recorded in your lab notebook. The Data Sheet from your lab notebook must be signed by me and the yellow copy must be turned in to me before you leave the lab (5 pts.). (You will keep the original copy). As well, you will need to sign a Lab Attendance Sheet. Lab Reports will not be accepted unless one of these has been completed for the experiment. Lab reports must be turned in individually (i.e., each student must turn in an assignment). The Prelab questions (5 pts) will be due prior to the start of the experiment. There will be 10 experiments in this semester. (Remember, you need to attend all of the classes, including the labs.) All of the 10 experiments that we will perform this semester will count; this will be necessary, since there will be no make-up labs. Each Report with Prelab is worth 20 pts; therefore, the total will be 200 points. So, a typical lab report that you will turn in will have then following sections:
So, in summary, the prelab is to be written before you come to lab and to be turned in before you perform an experiment. The data sheet must be completed by you during the lab on laboratory notebook paper found in your laboratory notebook. The postlab is the only thing that you will work on after performing the lab; you will have 14 school days (2 weeks) to turn in your postlab to me.
Students need to form groups of two in order to perform each lab. During the first class day, we will form the lab groups. If any groups of 3 are needed (due to an odd number of students in class), then I shall assign these. There should not be any groups of 4; if people choose to form groups of 4, they will be assigned a grade of zero. You need to attend all the lab sessions, if you miss a lab for any reason, you may obtain a copy of the data sheet from someone in the class or me and you may still turn in to me the postlab, but you will not be allowed to turn in to me the prelab, nor receive credit for the data sheet. Please note, your total lab grade will be out of 200 points. Please note: there have been several complaints of students not cleaning their glassware after experiments. Accordingly, I have decided to start a new policy. From now on, whenever you finish the laboratory experiment, you must clean and dry your glassware and place it on your lab bench. When asking for me to sign and collect your data sheet, you must show me your clean and dried glassware on your lab bench first. If you fail to show me your clean and dried glassware, I will not sign your data sheet, or I will deduct points from the postlab report.
Please note, eating and drinking are not allowed in classrooms or laboratories. This is especially true in the laboratories. You need to put away or throw away any food/drink before you enter the lecture room/laboratory.

f.Participation Grade. Blinn has now has added a participation grade to its core classes. Accordingly, this grade will be comprised of quizzes, called lecture quizzes. I anticipate that there will be at least 12 of these this semester, of which I will count the top ten. These quizzes will be handled by the mastering chemistry homework system. You will be able to access these quizzes just like you will access the homework. I will alert you when you may access these quizzes. The sum total of these quizzes will be 50 points; each is worth 5 points. The second part of the participation grade will be due to lab quizzes. There will be three lab quizzes scheduled during the semester, each of which is worth 25 points. I will take the top two, for a total of 50 points. The first lab quiz will be on Experiments 21-23. The second lab quiz will be on Experiments 24-26. The third will be on Experiments 27-30. The schedule for these quizzes will be updated later in the semester. The total participation grade is 10% of the total final grade or 100 points total (50 points from the lecture quizzes and 50 from the two lab quizzes).

Please note, you will have 5 exams and 4 homework assignments during the course of the semester. For the first 4 exams, your exam dates are the same as the due dates for the homework assignments. The fifth exam is the comprehensive optional 5th exam.

h. Final Exam. The final exam for this class will be comprehensive, all multiple-choice (a, b, c, d,e), and worth 200 points, or 20% of the grade, and last 2 hours, all of this in accordance with Blinn College Policy. The final exam for all 1412 will be a common final exam on Saturday, 4 May, 2013 from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. in a yet-to- be determined place, although it will most likely be in the Science Building.
i. Make-up work . Because of the nature of the course, make-up work can only be allowed for missed (a) exams, and b) lab quizzes. No other type of work will allowed make-up work. Of course, the only way that exams and lab quizzes will be allowed as make-up work is with the proper excused absence paperwork.
Grading Criteria/Final Course Grade for this course is as follows:

The range of each letter grade will be assigned at the end of the semester. Based on prior grade assignments, typical grade ranges are:
Total Course Points greater than or equal to 900 = A
Total Course Points greater than or equal to 800 but lower than 900 = B
Total Course Points greater than or equal to 700 but lower than 800 = C
Total Course Points greater than or equal to 600 but lower than 700 = D
Total Course Points less than 600 = F
It is impossible to tell if there will be a curve for this class; hence, we will look at the grades at the end of the semester to see if one were to be warranted.

The College District believes that class attendance is essential for student success; therefore, students are required to promptly and regularly attend all their classes. A record of attendance will be maintained from the first day of classes and/or the first day the student’s name appears on the roster through final examinations. If a student has one week’s worth of unexcused absences during the semester, he or she will be sent an e-mail by the College District requiring the student to contact his or her instructor and schedule a conference immediately to discuss his/her attendance issues. For classes that meet twice a week during the spring semester (i.e. this course), two absences count as one week’s absence. 1. observance of religious holy days - The student should notify his or her instructor(s) not later than the 15th day of the semester concerning the specific date(s) that the student will be absent for any religious holy day(s);

f. Electronic Devices. All the functions of all personal electronic devices designed for communication and/or entertainment (cell phones, pagers, beepers, iPods, and similar devices) must be turned off and kept out of sight in all College District classrooms and associated laboratories. Any noncompliance with this policy shall be addressed in accordance with Blinn College Civility Policy (Administrative Policy), see 10a above. g. Problem Resolution: If you have a complaint about your class, you should first request a conference with your instructor to try and resolve the problems or issues. h. Health Concerns. Eating and drinking beverages of any kind are not allowed in the classrooms and laboratories at Blinn College. Please remember that Blinn is a tobacco-free campus.

Days to remember in the calendar
1) The last day to drop the course with a grade of “Q” is Friday, April 12, 2013
2) The Final Exam will be on Saturday, May 4, 2013. All sections of CHEM 1412 will have a common Final Exam in the afternoon, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. The place of the exam has yet to be announced, although most, if not all, sections will have their test in the Science Building.
