Description


Basic preparation for a new peace officer. Should be taken in conjunction with Basic Peace Officer I, II, III, and V (supplement) to satisfy the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement approved Basic Peace Officer Training Academy. ***THIS COURSE MAY BE OFFERED ONLY BY INSTITUTIONS LICENSED AS A POLICE ACADEMY BY Texas Commission on Law Enforcement. ***. It covers laws directly related to police field work. Course topics include Texas Transportation Code, intoxicated driver, Texas Penal Code, elements of crimes, Texas Family Code, Texas Alcohol Beverage Code, and civil liability. It requires the demonstration and practice of the skills of a police officer, including patrol, driving, traffic stop skills, use of force, mechanics of arrest, firearm safety, and emergency medical care. It also includes study of techniques and procedures used by police officers on patrol. It includes controlled substance identification, handling abnormal persons, traffic collision investigation, note-taking and report writing, vehicle operation, traffic direction, crowd control, and jail operations. All students must complete academy application process. Admission to Blinn College does not guarantee admission to the police academy.

Prerequisites: All students must complete academy application process.

Corequisites: CJLE 1506, CJLE 1512, CJLE 1518

This course is not a core curriculum course.

Outcomes


Demonstrate an understanding of the Texas laws pertaining to, alcoholic beverages, traffic enforcement and crash investigation

 

Demonstrate an understanding of the of the psychological, social, and economic impact of family violence

Demonstrate the physical ability to apply the NHTSA Standardized Field Sobriety Test

Demonstrate the physical ability to apply proper shooting principles and proficiency with both handgun and shotgun

Demonstrate appropriate use of basic police radio communications, including use of the phonetic alphabet

Materials


All required materials will be distributed to the students by the academy coordinator for the course in accordance with the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement. Texas Penal Code and Motor Vehicle Handbook along with Academy Manual are required.

Course Requirements


Students must pass all elements of all courses CJLE 1506, 1512, 1518 and 1524 with a 80% average or higher

The Central Texas Police Academy is a pass/fail academy

This course is part of a four course sequence that represents a TCOLE approved Basic Police Academy

You must be 21 years of age at the completion of the academy in order to sit for the Basic Peace Officer licensing  exam
