Description


3 lecture hours and 3 lab hours per week; 96 total contact hours. Credit: 4 semester hours.

Study of the structure and function of human anatomy, including the neuroendocrine, integumentary, musculoskeletal, digestive, urinary, reproductive, respiratory, and circulatory systems. Content may be either integrated or specialized. Biology 2401 is the first course in a two semester sequence which examines the systems of the human body using an integrated approach. Lab activities reinforce lecture topics.

Requisites

Prerequisites: A student must be college ready in reading according to TSI college-ready standards.

Recommendation: BIOL 1406 is recommended.

Lab Manual: Laboratory Manual for Human Anatomy and Physiology 2017 Edition by Johnson, Ebbole, Barker and Paulhill

Course Requirements


Lecture Exams

You will need 4 Advantage scantrons (#28980), 1 for each of the lecture exams.  The 4 Lecture Exams may include both objective (multiple choice) or short answer questions and labeling of figures.  More will be specified in class as the date approaches.

Lab Practicals

Lab exams will be taken either online (on Blinn laptops).  All lab exams will be taken in the lab room, during the lab period.  The online Lab Exams will use the ecampus platform and may include pictures of models, tissues, cells, microscope slides and other preserved laboratory specimens presented during the Lab period or in the Lab Exercises.  Students will be required to identify these, or answer questions about their function.  The online Lab Exam may also include questions that require the student to analyze and interpret scientific data or answer objective questions about experiments or procedures performed.  The question format may include fill in the blank or multiple choice. 

Online Assignments

Online chapter readings and homework questions are assigned for each chapter and are expected to be completed before the start of a new chapter.  There are computers available to all students in the Student Computer labs if the student does not have internet access at home.  

All homework will be assigned through Connect, thus a McGraw-Hill access code will be required.   

Lab Work Points/ Major and Minor Quizzes

Lab Points will be determined by lab quizzes taken during the lab period and in-lab assignments completed before the end of the lab period.  Only those who attend lab can turn in any lab assignment for a grade, and no make-up labs or make-up quizzes specific to the missed lab will be given, however, at least 2 of the lowest lab and quiz grades will be dropped.   Quizzes may be given during the lecture and/or lab period. Students should study their lecture notes and lab manual.  Please note that the homework platform on McGraw-Hill’s “Connect” website may also be used for quiz points.

Final Exam

You will need 1 Advantage scantron (#28980) for the Final Exam.  The comprehensive final will include all chapters covered during the semester and will be given on the date specified in the Final Exam Calendar on the Blinn website and also in the schedule at the end of the syllabus.

Evaluation


100 points - 10% - Class participation: Weekly lab quizzes & graded lab reports

50 points - 5% - Class participation: Keeping lab space clean, participating in discussion

50 points - 5% - Connect Homework

200 points - 20% - Lab exams (4 of them, each worth 50 points)

400 points - 40% - Lecture Exams (cumulative, four exams weighed equally at 100 points - 10% each)

200 points - 20% - Final Exam (cumulative): 100 questions

Total points - 1000

Extra Credit: At the end of the semester, I will award up to 50 points (5%) bonus points based on in-lecture quizzes (using the iClicker) that I will give in class.  These will not be scheduled or announced ahead of time, so be sure to attend class or else you may miss some easy points!  This also ensures that you study and stay up-to-date on the material.

A: 90%-100%

B: 80-89%

C: 70-79%

D: 60-69%

F: <60%

Course Policies


Attendance

Missing either lecture or lab, or both lecture and lab, will count as one absence. Students who accrue one week’s worth of absences during the semester will be sent an e-mail through their Buc account requiring them to contact their instructor and immediately schedule a conference to discuss their attendance issues. Students who accumulate two weeks’ worth of unexcused absences, may be administratively withdrawn from class.

 

Tardiness

Attendance is crucial to success in this class, therefore three (3) tardies to lab or lecture will count as one (1) unexcused absence. A tardy is defined as arriving 10 minutes after the class starts or after attendance is taken, whichever comes first.

Make-Up Policy

Lecture Test 

In the instance of an excused absence that results in missing a lecture examination, a make-up exam will be arranged at the testing center on campus.  Please contact instructor withint two (2) class periods of returning to class to schedule time to complete the missed exam.

Lab Exams

In the instance of an excused absence that result in missing a lab examination, the student must contact the instructor within two (2) class periods of returning to class to schedule a time to complete the missed lab exam.

Lab Work and Quizzes

In the instance of an excused absence that result in missing a lab or a quiz, the missed lab or quiz will count as one of the labs or quizzes that is dropped in the grade book, otherwise the student must contact the instructor within one (1) class period to determine if there is an alternate means of making up the work missed.

CONNECT”, which contains study tools that can help you perform better on your quizzes and exams.  These include Learn Smart, APR (Anatomy and Physiology Revealed), and Interactive Art Quizzes. CONNECT is required for this class and is bundled together with the textbook and lab manual. The price includes an access code needed to register for CONNECT, which includes a digital copy of the textbook.

Laboratory Safety

Students will be provided with laboratory safety training during the first week of class. Students are expected to follow all safety rules including rules related to proper lab attire. Closed toe shoes are required in the laboratory. Students that fail to follow this rule, will be required to leave the lab and will be assigned an unexcused absence for the class day.

Problem Resolution

If you have a complaint about your class, you should first request a conference with your instructor to try and resolve the problems or issues. If the problems or issues cannot be resolved at the instructor level, you should request a conference with the Science Department Head.
