1 Lecture Hour Per Week, 16 Total Contact Hours, Credit: 1 hour

Individual Instruction-Music Composition provide our music students continuing instruction on the basic elements of music composition. Individual instruction in voice, instrument, composition, or conducting. (ACGM)

Core Curriculum Statement

This course is not a core curriculum course.


Upon completion of this course, student will be able to:

  1. Apply knowledge of musical parameters such as melody, harmony, rhythm, meter, and texture in a newly composed work of their own.
  2. Explain their compositional processes and musical decisions in a newly composed work of their own.
  3. Analyze and evaluate the compositions by established modern (and contemporary) composers.
  4. Incorporate various compositional techniques into their own process.
  5. Offer a performance critique of his/her own work and use results as an tool for improvement.


Music includes standard modern repertoire, recordings, and texts dealing with modern music. Books and software are to be purchased by the student with other materials supplied by the instructor. Blinn College will have some texts and articles available through the Blinn Library.

Required Equipment & Materials

Students will be required to purchase equipment & materials throughout the semester that will in turn be used during lessons.  Students are expected to make these purchases in a timely manner so that lessons, and their abilities, can progress efficiently.

Students may find it helpful to have some type of music notation software in order to enter composition into the computer and hear them for playback.
