The diversity and classification of life will be studied, including animals, plants, protists, fungi, and prokaryotes. Special emphasis will be given to anatomy, physiology, ecology, and evolution of plants and animals. Laboratory activities are designed to reinforce lecture topics.


Prerequisite: Students must be college ready in reading, by means of appropriate exemption score by TSI or alternative test; or by completing READ 0306, or READ 0307, or DIRW 0326, or ESOL 0325 with a “C”or better, or by completing READ 0208 or ESOL 0226 with a passing grade.

Recommended: MATH 1314 – Successful completion of College Algebra or concurrent enrollment in higher-level mathematics is recommended. It is also recommended that BIOL 1406, Biology for Science Majors I, be taken before BIOL 1407.

Core Curriculum Statement

This is a Core Course in the 42-Hour Core Curriculum of Blinn College. As such, students will develop proficiency in the appropriate Intellectual Competencies, Exemplary Educational Objectives, and Perspectives.


  1. Describe modern evolutionary synthesis, natural selection, population genetics, micro and macroevolution, and speciation.
  2. Describe phylogenetic relationships and classification schemes.
  3. Identify the major phyla of life with an emphasis on plants and animals, including the basis for classification, structural and physiological adaptations, evolutionary history, and ecological significance.
  4. Describe basic animal physiology and homeostasis as maintained by organ systems.
  5. Compare different sexual and asexual life cycles noting their adaptive advantages.
  6. Illustrate the relationship between major geologic change, extinctions, and evolutionary trends.
  7. Apply scientific reasoning to investigate questions, and utilize scientific tools such as microscopes and laboratory equipment to collect and analyze data.
  8. Use critical thinking and scientific problem-solving to make informed decisions in the laboratory.
  9. Communicate effectively the results of scientific investigations.

Course Requirements

eCampus Access

Access to the internet is required for full participation in this course.  Students may access eCampus on a home computer or at the Blinn computer labs located in H-225, L-258, and the Library.  Students coenrolled at Texas A&M may also use any computers on TAMU's campus.

I will be using eCampus to post course materials and communicate with students.  Additionally, you can ask me questions or address concerns via eCampus.  You may also contact other students on eCampus to discuss course-related topics.

Lab exercises

During the course of each lab, we will complete worksheets corresponding with the lab exercises for the day.  You will be required to use the lab manual's instructions and the provided lab materials to complete these exercises.  Each lab's exercise will be due at the beginning of the next lab period unless otherwise notified.  I will not be grading each lab exercise but will provide a list of the exercises that will be graded for your records.


Upon completion of each chapter in our lecture portion of the class, you will be assigned a homework activity corresponding to that chapter. These assignments will be given through the online course textbook website:  The homeworks over each chapter covered on each lecture exam will be due at 11:59 the night before each exam is to be taken. 

Students will have to use the access code provided with their textbook (if new) or purchase an access code through the website.  Options for purchasing the access code and the process by which you will access the section for this course will be given in class.

Lecture Exams

There will be 4 lecture exams worth 100 points each.  Lecture exams will consist of ~50 multiple choice/matching questions, 10 fill in the blank questions, and 5-10 short answer questions. All exams require an Advantage #28980 scantron.

Make-up exams are only offered to students with an excused absence. Excused absences include those officially recognized by Blinn College, plus a death in the family, or an illness with a doctor’s certification. To arrange for a make-up exam see me during the first class period following your absence or contact me via email as soon as possible.  Failure to contact me in a timely fashion will severly limit my ability to allow you to make up an exam.  An unexcused absence from an exam will result in a grade of zero.

Lab Exams (Practicals)

There will be 3 Lab Practicals worth 75 points each.  Lab practicals will consist of stations made up of questions covering the most recent lab exercises. Questions can involve indentification, interpretation, and analysis of specimens or lab equipment, or understanding of principles covered in lab exercises. 

No make-ups will be offered for missed lab exams. If you have a potential scheduling conflict, please contact me as soon as possible to resolve the problem.

Final Exam

We will have one final exam worth 200 points. It will be composed of approximately 150 multiple choice questions. The final exam will include both new content covered since the last regular lecture exam and old material covered by the four previous lecture exams.

Attendance Policy

The College District believes that class attendance is essential for student success; therefore, students are required to promptly and regularly attend all their classes. A record of attendance will be maintained from the first day of classes and/or the first day the student’s name appears on the roster through final examinations. If a student has one week’s worth of unexcused absences during the semester, he or she will be sent an e-mail by the College District requiring the student to contact his or her instructor and schedule a conference immediately to discuss his/her attendance issues. Should the student accumulate two weeks’ worth of unexcused absences, he or she will be administratively withdrawn from class.

There are four forms of excused absences recognized by the institution:

  1. observance of religious holy days—The student should notify his or her instructor(s) not later than the 15th day of the semester concerning the specific date(s) that the student will be absent for any religious holy day(s);
  2. representing the College District at an official institutional function;
  3. high school dual credit students representing the independent school district at an official institutional function; and
  4. military service.

Other absences may be considered excused at the discretion of the faculty member with appropriate documentation.  A student enrolled in a developmental course is subject to College District-mandated attendance policies. Failure to attend developmental classes shall result in removal from the course as defined by the College District.

It is the student’s responsibility to officially drop a class he or she is no longer attending.  To officially drop a class the student must obtain the class withdrawal form from Enrollment Services, complete the class withdrawal form, secure the required signatures, and return the completed form to Enrollment Services. The last day to drop with a Q is according to the Academic Calendar.

Scholastic Integrity

Blinn College does not tolerate cheating, plagiarism, or any other act of dishonesty with regard to the course in which you are enrolled.  The following text defines the faculty member’s responsibility with regard to the scholastic integrity expectation for this and all courses at Blinn College.

Final Grade Appeal

If a student wishes to appeal a final grade in a course, Blinn College Board Policy FLDB (Local), Course Grade Complaints, outlines the timeline for the appeal and the four steps in the appeal.  This policy is located in the Blinn College Student Handbook.

Electronic Devices

Cellular telephones and beepers/pagers must be disengaged while the student is in the Blinn College Library or any classroom/lab, unless otherwise instructed. Course Policies

Attendance Policy Reminder: Missing lecture, lab or both will count as one absence. For classes that meet 5 times a week during the summer semester one absence counts as one week's absence. Students accumulating more than two weeks worth of unexcused absences (3 unexcused absences) will be administratively dropped from the class.  If you miss 3 days, I will withdraw you from the class.  If dropped from the course, you will not be allowed to return.

Problem Resolution: If you have a complaint about your class, you should first request a conference with me (your professor) to try and resolve the problems or issues. Mutual Respect: I will give you all the respect you deserve without question. Simultaneously, I expect you to respect me and your classmates. Respect includes not speaking over others, wearing offensive or revealing clothing, or using cell phones/electronic devices in class.  There will be time to use cell phones between classes.  DO NOT USE THEM during class!
