Advanced principles of organic chemistry will be studied, including the structure, properties, and reactivity of aliphatic and aromatic organic molecules; and properties and behavior of organic compounds and their derivatives. Emphasis is placed on organic synthesis and mechanisms. Includes study of covalent and ionic bonding, nomenclature, stereochemistry, structure and reactivity, reaction mechanisms, functional groups, and synthesis of simple molecules. Laboratory activities will reinforce advanced principles of organic chemistry. This course is intended for students in science or pre-professional programs.


Prerequisites: CHEM 2423 with a grade of "C" or better.

Core Curriculum Statement

This course is not a core curriculum course.


  1. Correlate molecular structure with physical and chemical properties of aliphatic and aromatic organic molecules.
  2. Predict the mechanism and outcome of aliphatic and aromatic substitution and elimination reactions, given the conditions and starting materials.
  3. Describe reaction mechanisms in terms of energetics, reaction kinetics, and thermodynamics.
  4. Use spectroscopic techniques to characterize organic molecules and subgroups.
  5. Perform chemical experiments, analysis procedures, and waste disposal in a safe and responsible manner.
  6. Utilize scientific tools such as glassware and analytical instruments to collect and analyze data.
  7. Identify and utilize appropriate separation techniques such as distillation, extraction, and chromatography to purify organic compounds.
  8. Record experimental work completely and accurately in laboratory notebooks, and communicate experimental results clearly in written reports.

Course Requirements

Exams are a requirement.  There will be 4 exams worth 100 points each given about as indicated in the attached schedule.  Each of the exams will include all of the material covered through that stage of the course, i.e., all exams are comprehensive.  The lowest of the four exams will be replaced by final grade if the student makes better on final exam than the lowest grade. Format of the exams will vary.  Make up exams will be allowed in exceptional situations at my discretion, but only if taken before the graded exam is returned to the class.  The final exam is comprehensive and worth 200 points. 

 Laboratory Experiments are a requirement.  The laboratory portion of this course counts for 25% of the total course grade.  10 labs are scheduled for the semester. The lab work will be graded based upon written lab reports. The lab report format and the grading rubric will be available on e-campus under folder named “Labs”. Students must submit approved datasheets with the lab reports.  The lowest two lab grades will be dropped.  You will lose 5 points per class period for labs turned in late. There will be no makeup labs!

The lab final exam is based on all the labs covered during the semester. It is an open note exam.  Lab exam is worth 100 points.

Quizzes are a requirement.  There will be a number of quizzes given during the semester. You will have a quiz during every lecture period.  There will be no make-up offered for quizzes. The lowest two quiz grades will be dropped.

 Online homework assignments are a requirement. There will be 12/13 assignments. Homework will be graded on the following criteria: 1) Homework completed by deadline; 2) the assignment is complete and 3) The correct answer.  The homework is worth 50 points. If you fail to submit your homework, you will receive a grade of zero for that section. You will receive a score for each chapter assignment.  No extensions for homework under any circumstances.

Eye protection is a requirement.  Students are responsible for purchasing appropriate eye protection and wearing eye protection during laboratories.  Appropriate eye protection for this class will be safety goggles.


Formal grading will be based upon a point system as follows:

Attendance Policy

The College District believes that class attendance is essential for student success; therefore, students are required to promptly and regularly attend all their classes. A record of attendance will be maintained from the first day of classes and/or the first day the student’s name appears on the roster through final examinations. If a student has one week’s worth of unexcused absences during the semester, he or she will be sent an e-mail by the College District requiring the student to contact his or her instructor and schedule a conference immediately to discuss his/her attendance issues. Should the student accumulate two weeks’ worth of unexcused absences, he or she will be administratively withdrawn from class.

There are four forms of excused absences recognized by the institution:

  1. observance of religious holy days—The student should notify his or her instructor(s) not later than the 15th day of the semester concerning the specific date(s) that the student will be absent for any religious holy day(s);
  2. representing the College District at an official institutional function;
  3. high school dual credit students representing the independent school district at an official institutional function; and
  4. military service.

Other absences may be considered excused at the discretion of the faculty member with appropriate documentation.  A student enrolled in a developmental course is subject to College District-mandated attendance policies. Failure to attend developmental classes shall result in removal from the course as defined by the College District.

It is the student’s responsibility to officially drop a class he or she is no longer attending.  To officially drop a class the student must obtain the class withdrawal form from Enrollment Services, complete the class withdrawal form, secure the required signatures, and return the completed form to Enrollment Services. The last day to drop with a Q is according to the Academic Calendar.

Scholastic Integrity

Blinn College does not tolerate cheating, plagiarism, or any other act of dishonesty with regard to the course in which you are enrolled.  The following text defines the faculty member’s responsibility with regard to the scholastic integrity expectation for this and all courses at Blinn College.

Final Grade Appeal

Cellular telephones and beepers/pagers must be disengaged while the student is in the Blinn College Library or any classroom/lab, unless otherwise instructed. Attendance Policy Reminder:  Missing lecture, lab or both will count as one absence.  For classes that meet twice a week during the spring semester two absences counts as one week's absence.  Students accumulating two week’s worth of absences (four unexcused absences) will be dropped.
