Organic Chemistry I CHEM-2423

In this course, the fundamental principles of organic chemistry will be studied, including the structure, bonding, properties, and reactivity of organic molecules; and properties and behavior of organic compounds and their derivatives. Emphasis is placed on organic synthesis and mechanisms. Includes study of covalent and ionic bonding, nomenclature, stereochemistry, structure and reactivity, reaction mechanisms, functional groups, and synthesis of simple molecules. Laboratory activities will reinforce fundamental principles of organic chemistry. This course is intended for students in science or pre-professional programs.
Prerequisites: CHEM 1412 with a grade of "C" or better.
Core Curriculum Statement
This course is not a core curriculum course.
- Classify organic compounds by structure, molecular orbitals, hybridization, resonance, tautomerism, polarity, chirality, conformation, and functionality.
- Identify organic molecules using appropriate organic nomenclature.
- Describe the principle reactions for syntheses of molecules, ions, and radicals.
- Describe organic reactions in terms of radical and ionic mechanisms.
- Predict the chirality of reaction products based on enantiomeric and diastereomeric relationships.
- Describe the use of spectroscopic data to determine the structure of organic molecules.
- Formulate appropriate reaction conditions for the synthesis of simple organic molecules.
- Perform chemical experiments, analysis procedures, and waste disposal in a safe and responsible manner.
- Utilize scientific tools such as glassware and analytical instruments to collect and analyze data.
- Identify and utilize appropriate separation techniques such as distillation, extraction, and chromatography to purify organic compounds.
- Record experimental work completely and accurately in laboratory notebooks, and communicate experimental results clearly in written reports.
- Demonstrate a basic understanding of stereochemistry.
- Perform organic syntheses of molecules.
- Use spectroscopic data to determine the structure of organic molecules.

Safety Equipment: safety eyewear (OSHA approved chemical goggles- REQUIRED), Lab Coat (REQUIRED)
Exams are a requirement. There will be 4 exams worth 100 points each given about as indicated in the attached schedule. Each of the exams will include all of the material covered through that stage of the course, i.e., all exams are comprehensive. The lowest of the four exam grades will be dropped. Format of the exams will vary. Make up exams will be allowed in exceptional situations at my discretion, but only if taken before the graded exam is returned to the class. The final exam is comprehensive worth 150 points.
Laboratory Experiments are a requirement. The laboratory portion of this course counts for 25% of the total course grade. We have 9 labs scheduled. The lab grade will be the average of your lab report grades. Lab reports will be due at the beginning of the next class period after the lab is completed. The lowest of the lab grades will be dropped. You will lose 5 points per class period for labs turned in late.
Quizzes are a requirement. There will be a number of quizzes given during the year. There will be no make-up offered for quizzes. The lowest of the quiz grades will be dropped.
Student Summary. During the course of the semester, you will be called upon to present to the class a summary of a topic covered in the previous lecture. You will be graded on the completeness and accuracy of your summary.
Eye protection is a requirement. Students are responsible for purchasing appropriate eye protection and wearing eye protection during laboratories. Appropriate eye protection for this class will be safety goggles.
Grades will be calculated in the following manner:

Lecture accounts for 75 % of the final Course Grade

The grading scale will be:
Course Grade ≥ 90 % = A
Course Grade ≥ 80 % = B
Course Grade ≥ 70 % = C
Course Grade ≥ 60 % = D
Course Grade < 60 % = F
Blinn College Policies

Civility Notification Statement. If a student is asked to leave the classroom because of uncivil behavior, the student may not return to that class until he or she arranges a conference with the instructor; it is the student’s responsibility to arrange for this conference.

The College District believes that class attendance is essential for student success; therefore, students are required to promptly and regularly attend all their classes. A record of attendance will be maintained from the first day of classes and/or the first day the student’s name appears on the roster through final examinations. If a student has one week’s worth of unexcused absences during the semester, he or she will be sent an e-mail by the College District requiring the student to contact his or her instructor and schedule a conference immediately to discuss his/her attendance issues. Should the student accumulate two weeks’ worth of unexcused absences, he or she will be administratively withdrawn from class.
There are four forms of excused absences recognized by the institution:
- observance of religious holy days—The student should notify his or her instructor(s) not later than the 15th day of the semester concerning the specific date(s) that the student will be absent for any religious holy day(s);
- representing the College District at an official institutional function;
- high school dual credit students representing the independent school district at an official institutional function; and
- military service.
Other absences may be considered excused at the discretion of the faculty member with appropriate documentation. A student enrolled in a developmental course is subject to College District-mandated attendance policies. Failure to attend developmental classes shall result in removal from the course as defined by the College District.
It is the student’s responsibility to officially drop a class he or she is no longer attending. To officially drop a class the student must obtain the class withdrawal form from Enrollment Services, complete the class withdrawal form, secure the required signatures, and return the completed form to Enrollment Services. The last day to drop with a Q is according to the Academic Calendar.
Blinn College does not tolerate cheating, plagiarism, or any other act of dishonesty with regard to the course in which you are enrolled. The following text defines the faculty member’s responsibility with regard to the scholastic integrity expectation for this and all courses at Blinn College.
It is the responsibility of faculty members to maintain scholastic integrity at the College District by refusing to tolerate any form of scholastic dishonesty. Adequate control of test materials, strict supervision during testing, and other preventive measures should be utilized, as necessary, to prevent cheating or plagiarism. If there is compelling evidence that a student is involved in cheating or plagiarism, the instructor should assume responsibility and address the infraction. Likewise, any student accused of scholastic dishonesty is entitled to due process as outlined in Blinn College Board Policy FLB (Local). The Scholastic Integrity Policy is located in the Blinn College Student Handbook. In a case of scholastic dishonesty, it is critical that written documentation be maintained at each level throughout the process.

Attendance Policy Reminder: Missing lecture, lab or both will count as one absence. For classes that meet twice a week during the spring semester two absences counts as one week's absence. Students accumulating two week’s worth of absences (four unexcused absences) will be dropped.
Problem Resolution: If you have a complaint about your class, you should first request a conference with your instructor to try and resolve the problems or issues. If the problems or issues cannot be resolved at the instructor level, you should request a conference with the Division Chair, Mr. Dwight Bohlmeyer, Science 241, email@example.com.
Eating and Drinking: Eating and drinking are not allowed in classrooms or laboratories.
