Fundamental principles of chemistry for majors in the sciences, health sciences, and engineering; topics include measurements, fundamental properties of matter, states of matter, chemical reactions, chemical stoichiometry, periodicity of elemental properties, atomic structure, chemical bonding, molecular structure, solutions, properties of gases, and an introduction to thermodynamics and descriptive chemistry. The laboratory experiments are designed to support theoretical principles presented in lecture and include an introduction of the scientific method, experimental design, data collection and analysis, and the preparation of laboratory reports.


Prerequisites: MATH1314 or MATH 1414 with a grade of "C" or higher or an SAT math score of 550 or higher or an ACT math score of 22 or higher.

Core Curriculum Statement

This is a Core Course in the 42-Hour Core Curriculum of Blinn College. As such, students will develop proficiency in the appropriate Intellectual Competencies, Exemplary Educational Objectives, and Perspectives.


  1. Define the fundamental properties of matter.
  2. Classify matter, compounds, and chemical reactions.
  3. Determine the basic nuclear and electronic structure of atoms.
  4. Identify trends in chemical and physical properties of the elements using the Periodic Table.
  5. Describe the bonding in and the shape of simple molecules and ions.
  6. Solve stoichiometric problems.
  7. Write chemical formulas.
  8. Write and balance equations.
  9. Use the rules of nomenclature to name chemical compounds.
  10. Define the types and characteristics of chemical reactions.
  11. Use the gas laws and basics of the Kinetic Molecular Theory to solve gas problems.
  12. Determine the role of energy in physical changes and chemical reactions.
  13. Convert units of measure and demonstrate dimensional analysis skills.
  14. Use basic apparatus and chemicals with proper laboratory techniques and apply experimental methodologies used in the chemistry laboratory.
  15. Make a detailed written laboratory report that includes careful recording of accurate experimental observations, interpretations of experimental data, and the presentation of logical conclusions according to theoretical principles with supporting references.
  16. Design fundamental experiments involving principles of chemistry.

Course Requirements

Course Outline:  Chemistry 1411 covers chapters 1 through 10 and chapter 18 of the textbook.  Completion of both the lecture and the laboratory is required for a single grade for 4 credit hours of work. 


Lecture:  The material in lecture will cover the above mentioned chapters.  There will be additional material in the textbook that will not be covered in lecture, you will be responsible for that material as well.  There will be additional materials for your practice only available on eCampus.  You may print any of this material up for your use.  All cell phones and any additional electronic devices will not be used during lecture or class time.


Reading Assignments:  This syllabus lists reading assignments that will be due prior to the lecture.  Quizzes covering the reading assignments will be given during lecture time to ensure that your reading assignments are completed.


Exams:  There will be 5 major exams for this class that are composed of both multiple choice and free response questions.  Only simple scientific calculators (standard, without graph and memory features) will be allowed during an exam or quiz. Other electronic devices, including cell phones, must be turned off and put away during the exam.  The multiple choice questions and the free response questions will be filled out appropriately on the test.  I will give further details about how to respond to the questions to ensure maximum points to be assigned.  Students may not leave the exam to go to the restroom.


Homework:  There will be seven homework assignments through MasteringChemistry.  The due dates are listed below in this syllabus, they are due by 10AM on the due date listed.  MasteringChemistry is an online tutorial and homework system.  To access the homework, you must have an access code.  This is available with the purchase of any new textbook, an electronic textbook package, or you can purchase the access code for MasteringChemistry by itself.  I will review these options during the first day of lecture.  You can find information on the access code and any desired instructions on



There will be 12 laboratories covered in this course.  There will be times in which we will not be working on a laboratory during the alloted time.  You will be required to attend this alloted laboratory time, regardless.  We will be doing additional lectures during this time period.

Laboratory Work:  The lab work makes up 25% of your grade.  This grade will be determined by pre-lab work, attendence in the lab, the laboratory report, and laboratory .  There will be pre-lab questions, reading assignments, pre-lab questions and preparation of the in-lab guidelines due at the start of each lab.  During the laboratory, all safety procedures must be followed. 

Lab Safety:  There will be certain safety procedures that must be followed at all times. Failure to follow procedures will result in a expulsion from the laboratory and a zero for that laboratory.  There will be a contract stating your intentions to follow all safety procedures you must sign and a safety quiz that you must pass before you can attend any lab. 

Students are required to wear closed toes shoes that cover the entire foot, safety glasses, at a minimum short sleeves (no tank tops), and at a minimum skirts/shorts that cover the knees.  If appropriate clothes are not worn, the student cannot attend the lab and will be given a zero for that lab grade.  It would be advisable to have a spare set of pants and shoes in your vehicle or purchase a lab coat to carry to class, in addition to your goggles. 

Lab Quizzes: There will be two laboratory quizzes through the semester.  The questions in these quizzes will be centered around mathmatical components of the laboratory, techniques learned in the laboratory, and the objectives of each laboratory. 

Missed Labs:  There will be no makeup labs available.  Partial credit for pre-lab questions and post-lab questions will be given for credit if completed for an excused absence.  The criteria for grades shows that 10/12 labs are used for 20% of the grade.

Late Lab Reports will not be accepted.


Deadlines:All assigned work is expected to be turned in on time. There will be no late work accepted.


Final Exam:  The final exam will be comprehensive and all multiple-choice worth 200 points.

The following are required components of a student’s final grade.

  1. Major Exams: At least three major exams covering the lecture material, evenly distributed throughout the semester. Major exams will account for at least 30% of the final grade.
  2. Laboratory Reports: At least 8 laboratory experiments will be performed.  Lab Exams may be given at the discretion of the instructor.  The laboratory work will account for 25% of the final grade
  3. Homework: Assigned by the instructor. These materials will account for approximately 10% of the final grade.
  4. Final Exam: Comprehensive exam covering the entire course. The comprehensive final exam will account for at least 20% of the final grade.
  5. Additional Reports or Projects: Given at the discretion of the instructor.


There are six different components of your final grade.

One safety quiz and two laboratory procedure quizzes will be given.  The dates of these quizzes are not in the syllabus, they will be pop quizzes to ensure that you are completing all of the assignments.

Quizzes 5% Reading Assignments

There will be several reading assignment quizzes given throughout the semester.  The dates of these quizzes are not in the syllabus.  These will be pop quizzes to ensure that the assigments are being completed.

Final Exam 20% All material from Chem 1411

The final exam will be given on December 11th.  The final will be composed of comprehensive multiple-choice questions.


Laboratory Grade Guidelines:


Lab Procedure

Discussion:  We will discuss the lab in the lecture period before that lab is scheduled. 

PreLab Work:  I will come around at the beginning of the lab and initall all pre-lab work due.  It is your responsibility to make sure your pre-lab work is initalled for full credit.

End of Lab:  You must clean your station and leave all glassware out for inspection.  I will come around and sign your data.  This is worth 1/4 of  your lab grade.  DO NOT LEAVE UNTIL YOU HAVE MY INITIALS.  This is your responsibility.


Lab Report Structure in Order

1.  Pre-Lab Questions (must have initials for full credit)

    You may use provided worksheets from lab manual for this portion of the report.

2.  Procedure (must have initials for full credit)

  This needs to be written out in an abbreviated fashion from the lab manual.  You may write this out on any type of paper you choose, normal notebook paper, typed, or using the carbon copy paper at the back of the manual.

3. Data (must have two sets of initials for ANY credit)

    You must use carbon copy area of lab notebook to write down the in-lab guidelines.  You must use an ink pen and leave the carbon copy pages in the manual until the lab report is ready to be turned in.  Leave the yellow sheets inside the lab manual and turn in the original copy of the data with your report.

4.  Calculations

    You may use provided worksheets from lab manual for this portion of the report.

5.  Conclusion

   This needs to be written or typed on any type of paper of your choosing.  You must write at least one long paragraph discussing the whether the objective of the lab was met or not, whether you feel as if your data was correct or not, and if there were any problems.  If there were problems, please discuss what could've been done to prevent it.

6.  Post Lab Questions

    You may use provided worksheets from lab manual for this portion of the report.


Grade Breakdown:

Pre-Lab The pre-lab questions, the procedure, and the in-lab guidelines are due at the beginning of each lab.  I will come around and initial these at the start of class.  If I haven't initialled your lab by the first 20 minutes, please ask me to come by.  This component of your lab grade is worth 25%.  If you turn the lab report in without initials on these sections of the lab report, you will only receive 1/2 credit.

Overall Lab Skills and Safety:  Clean lab station and glassware was left in, and following the safety guidelines were followed are worth 25% of the lab grade. 

Data:  The final data from the lab is worth 25% of lab grade.  You must have your data signed by me prior to leaving the laboratory.  I will not sign data until glassware and lab station are clean and waiting for my inspection. 

Report:  Lab Report Structure and Conclusions are worth 10% of lab report grade, and Post-Lab Questionsare worth 10% of lab report grade.  Any required calculations are worth 5% of your lab grade.

Attendance Policy

The College District believes that class attendance is essential for student success; therefore, students are required to promptly and regularly attend all their classes. A record of attendance will be maintained from the first day of classes and/or the first day the student’s name appears on the roster through final examinations. If a student has one week’s worth of unexcused absences during the semester, he or she will be sent an e-mail by the College District requiring the student to contact his or her instructor and schedule a conference immediately to discuss his/her attendance issues. Should the student accumulate two weeks’ worth of unexcused absences, he or she will be administratively withdrawn from class.

There are four forms of excused absences recognized by the institution:

  1. observance of religious holy days—The student should notify his or her instructor(s) not later than the 15th day of the semester concerning the specific date(s) that the student will be absent for any religious holy day(s);
  2. representing the College District at an official institutional function;
  3. high school dual credit students representing the independent school district at an official institutional function; and
  4. military service.

Other absences may be considered excused at the discretion of the faculty member with appropriate documentation.  A student enrolled in a developmental course is subject to College District-mandated attendance policies. Failure to attend developmental classes shall result in removal from the course as defined by the College District.

It is the student’s responsibility to officially drop a class he or she is no longer attending.  To officially drop a class the student must obtain the class withdrawal form from Enrollment Services, complete the class withdrawal form, secure the required signatures, and return the completed form to Enrollment Services. The last day to drop with a Q is according to the Academic Calendar.

Scholastic Integrity

Blinn College does not tolerate cheating, plagiarism, or any other act of dishonesty with regard to the course in which you are enrolled.  The following text defines the faculty member’s responsibility with regard to the scholastic integrity expectation for this and all courses at Blinn College.

Final Grade Appeal

If a student wishes to appeal a final grade in a course, Blinn College Board Policy FLDB (Local), Course Grade Complaints, outlines the timeline for the appeal and the four steps in the appeal.  This policy is located in the Blinn College Student Handbook.

Electronic Devices

Cellular telephones and beepers/pagers must be disengaged while the student is in the Blinn College Library or any classroom/lab, unless otherwise instructed. Any noncompliance with this policy shall be addressed in accordance with the College District civility policy (administrative policy).  This information is contained in Blinn College Board Policy FLB (Local).

Lecture and Laboratory Policies

Please be respectful of the instructor and their policies during class time and laboratory time.  If any vulgur language is used, the instructor has a right to ask you to leave the class or lab. 

Eating and Drinking

Eating or drinking are not allowed in classrooms or laboratories.

Attendance is required for both the laboratory and the lecture.  If either one is missed it counts as an absence.  Four absences that are not excused absences recognized as above mentioned by Blinn College will result in the student being dropped from the course.

Dropping the Course:  It is the student's responsibility to officially drop a class.  The last day to drop this semester with a Q is April 25th. 


All students are expected to present only their work in this course.  Any student presenting collaborative work with a second student will recieve a zero for that work and can be expelled for the semester from the course.
