Fundamental principles of chemistry for majors in the sciences, health sciences, and engineering; topics include measurements, fundamental properties of matter, states of matter, chemical reactions, chemical stoichiometry, periodicity of elemental properties, atomic structure, chemical bonding, molecular structure, solutions, properties of gases, and an introduction to thermodynamics and descriptive chemistry. The laboratory experiments are designed to support theoretical principles presented in lecture and include an introduction of the scientific method, experimental design, data collection and analysis, and the preparation of laboratory reports.


Prerequisites: MATH1314 or MATH 1414 with a grade of "C" or higher or an SAT math score of 550 or higher or an ACT math score of 22 or higher.

Core Curriculum Statement

This is a Core Course in the 42-Hour Core Curriculum of Blinn College. As such, students will develop proficiency in the appropriate Intellectual Competencies, Exemplary Educational Objectives, and Perspectives.


  1. Define the fundamental properties of matter.
  2. Classify matter, compounds, and chemical reactions.
  3. Determine the basic nuclear and electronic structure of atoms.
  4. Identify trends in chemical and physical properties of the elements using the Periodic Table.
  5. Describe the bonding in and the shape of simple molecules and ions.
  6. Solve stoichiometric problems.
  7. Write chemical formulas.
  8. Write and balance equations.
  9. Use the rules of nomenclature to name chemical compounds.
  10. Define the types and characteristics of chemical reactions.
  11. Use the gas laws and basics of the Kinetic Molecular Theory to solve gas problems.
  12. Determine the role of energy in physical changes and chemical reactions.
  13. Convert units of measure and demonstrate dimensional analysis skills.
  14. Use basic apparatus and chemicals with proper laboratory techniques and apply experimental methodologies used in the chemistry laboratory.
  15. Make a detailed written laboratory report that includes careful recording of accurate experimental observations, interpretations of experimental data, and the presentation of logical conclusions according to theoretical principles with supporting references.
  16. Design fundamental experiments involving principles of chemistry.

Course Requirements

Course Outline: Chemistry 1411 covers chapters 1-10 & 18 of the text. Completion of both the lecture and the lab is required to receive a single grade for 4 credit hours of work. 


Lecture: During the time devoted to lecture, the most difficult sections of a reading assignment will be emphasized. There will be assigned material that will not be covered in lecture, but that does not mean that the material is not to be covered on exams. Lecture slides are only outlines for the reading assignment. Lecture slides are available on eCampus under the ‘Lessons’ tab.  Print these off as: handouts, 4 slides /page, landscape orientation. Please turn all cell phone, music players and computers off during lecture.


Reading Assignments: The syllabus lists the appropriate reading assignment that should be completed prior to lecture. Prior reading of the material familiarizes students with the pertinent vocabulary and concepts allowing the students to gain a better understanding through lecture and practice.


Quizzes: There will be 10 quizzes during the semester worth total 50 points.



  • All exams are closed book exams. No notes may be used on the exams. All necessary information will be supplied. Responses to the multiple choice portion will be made via the Scantron. Please do bring a scantron for each exam. Mark all of your answers on the exam as well as the scantron before turning in the exam. Only the simple scientific calculators (nonprogrammable) will be allowed. The instructor will not loan calculators to students without the appropriate calculator. All mobile phones and electronic devices must be turned off and stowed during the exam. Students may not leave the exam to go to the restroom. 
  • The 5 lecture exams will be composed of a combination of multiple-choice and free response questions. There will be 5 exams worth 80 points each.
  • The final exam will be comprehensive and all multiple-choice worth 200 points. The final exam will be held on 05/05 at 5:30-7:30 pm.
  • Exams missed without timely notification of the instructor will be given a grade of zero. This means you must email or phone the instructor the day of the exam
  • Make up exams for the following one week are only offered to students with an excused absence and appropriate notification. Excused absences include those officially recognized by Blinn College, plus a death in the family or an illness with a doctor’s certification. To arrange for make-up exam see me during the first class period following your absence. There will be no multiple choices in makeup exams.


Homework: The 5onlinehomework assignments will coincide with the 5 regularly scheduled exams and be due 11:55 pm the night before the exam. Homework will be graded based on the following criteria:

  • Homework is turned in on time.
  • The assignment is complete.
  • The answers are correct.

Homework collection and grading will be handled by the Mastering Chemistry. To access the homework you must have an access code which should come packaged with any new textbook and any used textbook from the Blinn Bookstore. Further instructions are given in the Mastering Chemistry Registration handout or at the website: .  Those acquiring used books from somewhere other than the Blinn Bookstore will need to purchase the access code online at the above URL.

Lab Work: The laboratory portion of this course counts for 25 % of the total course grade. Each lab activity is worth 25 points: 8 points for the Pre—Lab Questions, 2 points for a copy of the Data Sheet, 15 points for the Post-Lab Report and Questions.  Pre-Lab Questions, Post-Lab Reports and Post-Lab Questions are expected to be the students own work. 

To successfully perform a lab a student must:

  • Prior to entering the lab
    • Read the introductory and conceptual information pertinent to the experiment and complete the Pre-Lab Questions the night before the lab
    • Prepare the lab notebook:
      • Write out theprocedure in bulleted format, include waste disposal
      • Copy the In-Lab Guidelines onto a fresh carbonless lab notebook page to use as your Data Sheet.
      • After completion of the experiment
        • Clean up the working lab area and equipment before leaving the lab. Failure to clean up your lab area and equipment will result in loss of points (50%).
        • Have the instructor initial and date both copies of your Data Sheet and turn in one copy of the before leaving the lab. Data sheets must be turned in individually.
        • Complete the Post-Lab Report and Post-Lab Questions in the Lab Manual and turn these in at the next lab meeting.  

All calculations must organized and include equations, units and significant figures. Answers to questions should include an explanation. To receive credit for the answer, you must explain why. Simply putting “too high” or “too low” will not receive any points. Answering by saying “you must repeat the experiment” or “the data are off” will receive zero points.


Missed Labs: Makeup labs are not available. Partial credit for Pre-lab and Post-lab questions will be given for missed labs if the student promptly emails the instructor and requests data. Do not Be Late to lab! Otherwise you will not be allowed to participate in the lab experiment.


Deadlines: All assigned work is expected to be turned in on time.Late work may be turned in at the next class meeting for a maximum of 5 points earned. (instead of 15 points)


Lab Safety Protection Policy: Students will not be allowed to participate in any wet experiment until being cleared for safety. Students are required to wear long pants and shirts with sleeves. Closed toe shoes and appropriate safety eye wear must be worn at all times during lab procedures.  Failure to do so will result in expulsion from that laboratory experience and will automatically result in grade zero for this lab.You must wear safety goggles all the time in the lab.Students are responsible for purchasing appropriate eye protection and wearing eye protection during lab. Appropriate eye protection for this class will be safety goggles. No ‘loaners’ are available.

Attendance Policy

The College District believes that class attendance is essential for student success; therefore, students are required to promptly and regularly attend all their classes. A record of attendance will be maintained from the first day of classes and/or the first day the student’s name appears on the roster through final examinations. If a student has one week’s worth of unexcused absences during the semester, he or she will be sent an e-mail by the College District requiring the student to contact his or her instructor and schedule a conference immediately to discuss his/her attendance issues. Should the student accumulate two weeks’ worth of unexcused absences, he or she will be administratively withdrawn from class.

There are four forms of excused absences recognized by the institution:

  1. observance of religious holy days—The student should notify his or her instructor(s) not later than the 15th day of the semester concerning the specific date(s) that the student will be absent for any religious holy day(s);
  2. representing the College District at an official institutional function;
  3. high school dual credit students representing the independent school district at an official institutional function; and
  4. military service.

Other absences may be considered excused at the discretion of the faculty member with appropriate documentation.  A student enrolled in a developmental course is subject to College District-mandated attendance policies. Failure to attend developmental classes shall result in removal from the course as defined by the College District.

It is the student’s responsibility to officially drop a class he or she is no longer attending.  To officially drop a class the student must obtain the class withdrawal form from Enrollment Services, complete the class withdrawal form, secure the required signatures, and return the completed form to Enrollment Services. The last day to drop with a Q is according to the Academic Calendar.

Scholastic Integrity

Blinn College does not tolerate cheating, plagiarism, or any other act of dishonesty with regard to the course in which you are enrolled.  The following text defines the faculty member’s responsibility with regard to the scholastic integrity expectation for this and all courses at Blinn College.

Cellular telephones and beepers/pagers must be disengaged while the student is in the Blinn College Library or any classroom/lab, unless otherwise instructed. Course Policies

a.     Attendance Policy Reminder:  Missing either lecture or lab will count as one absence.  For classes that meet twice a week during the spring semester two absences counts as one week's absence.  Students accumulating two weeks’ worth of absences (four unexcused absences) will be dropped.


b.     Problem Resolution: If you have a complaint about your class, you should first request a conference with your instructor to try and resolve the problems or issues.
