Description


An introduction to the fundamentals and principles of chemistry as related to man's culture and environment. Designed for liberal arts and non-science majors. Cannot be substituted for CHEM 1411.

Core Curriculum Statement


This is a Core Course in the 42-Hour Core Curriculum of Blinn College. As such, students will develop proficiency in the appropriate Intellectual Competencies, Exemplary Educational Objectives, and Perspectives.

Outcomes


  1. Recognize the symbols of the elements and distinguish between isotopes.
  2. Differentiate between nuclear fusion and fission reactions and write balanced nuclear equations. 
  3. Solve problems based on the concept of half-life. 
  4. Predict trends that occur within a group or across successive periods on the periodic table. 
  5. Identify the shapes of molecules and distinguish whether molecules are polar or non-polar. 
  6. Differentiate between intermolecular forces by strength and identify the intermolecular forces present in a collection of molecules. 
  7. Write balanced chemical equations and perform calculations based on those equations. 
  8. Differentiate between strong and weak acids and bases and calculate the pH of strong acid or base solutions. 
  9. Identify which reactants are being oxidized or reduced. 
  10. Differentiate between classes of organic compounds by functional group and name. 
  11. Describe the solution process and specify solution concentration numerically. 
  12. Describe relationships between the pressure, volume, temperature and number of moles of a gas and calculate changes in quantity when the pressure, volume or temperature of a gas is varied.

Lab Manual: Introductory Chemistry 1405 Laboratory Manual, 2nd edition, Chammi S. Miller and Beverly Clement.

Calculator: simple scientific calculator. Students may not use a cell phone as a calculator. If a student forgets their calculator on an exam or quiz day, the student will be doing math by hand. Bring an approved calculator to class each day. The Learning Center currently provides loaner calculators in exchange for a Blinn ID.

Course Requirements


All sections of this course regardless of location or modality will include:

  1. A minimum of three major exams
  2. Comprehensive final exam

Lecture

Lecture will be from 10:35-11:50 am in H207. During the time devoted to lecture, the most difficult sections of a reading assignment will be emphasized. A short amount of time will be allocated to answering questions and solving problems.

Laboratory

The lab will be held from 12:00-1:15 pm in S218. The lab work consists of selected experiments which are integrated with the material being presented in the lecture portion of class. The prelab is due at the beginning of the lab time.  All laboratory exercises will be completed in the laboratory classroom and the postlab will be due one week after the experiment is performed, unless otherwise noted.  Please Note: Students will be dismissed from the laboratory if they fail to follow safety procedures, fail to wear protective eye wear at all times, or wear clothing inappropriate for the laboratory.

Help

It is easy to fall behind and become overwhelmed by the work.  Students should make every attempt to keep up and stay current with the instruction in the lecture.  Every student should feel free to schedule an appointment for help.  There are also free tutors and computerized tutorials available in the Learning Center.

Criteria

Lecture Exams:

There will be five lecture exams during the semester plus a comprehensive final exam. Exams can include multiple choice and short answer questions. In the event of absence, it is the student’s responsibility to contact the instructor prior to the first class period following the missed exam in order to schedule a make-up for the exam. Make-up exams will only be offered to students with an excused absence. Excused absences include those officially recognized by Blinn College, plus a death in the family, or an illness with a doctor’s certification. An unexcused absence from an exam will result in a grade of zero.

 

Laboratory Exercises:

The laboratory portion of Chemistry 1405 will include exercises designed to enhance the student’s understanding of the concepts presented in the lecture portion of the class. The prelab questions are answered directly in the manual and then the pages will be turned in at the beginning of the lab period.  All laboratory exercises will be completed during the laboratory period and a copy of the data sheet should be turned in before you leave the lab. The post lab reports are due at the start of the lecture peroid one week after they are performed. Postlab reports should be done directly on the pages of the manual.  Tear out the sheets and staple the carbonless copy of the data to them.

Absence from a laboratory class period for which a laboratory exercise is scheduled will result in a grade of zero for the laboratory exercise. Due to limitations on laboratory class time and availability, no make-up laboratory exercises will be offered.

 

Quizzes:

There will be several short quizzes given during the semester covering material from the lecture and laboratory. Quizzes will generally be given at the start of the lecture or laboratory period and take less than 15 minutes. They will be worth 10 points each.  There will be no make up for missed quizzes.

 

Homework:

Homework related to each of the topics covered in the lecture portion of the class will be periodically assigned. Homework problems will include problems from the end of the textbook chapters and other materials to give the student additional practice with the course content. Homework will be due at the beginning of class on the day of the exam covering the assigned material. Late homework will not be accepted.

Homework collection and grading will be handled by the Online Web-Based Learning (OWL) System. A code must be purchased in order to access this system. Further instructions are given at the website: http://owl.cengage.com.

Attendance Policy

The College District believes that class attendance is essential for student success; therefore, students are required to promptly and regularly attend all their classes. A record of attendance will be maintained from the first day of classes and/or the first day the student’s name appears on the roster through final examinations. If a student has one week’s worth of unexcused absences during the semester, he or she will be sent an e-mail by the College District requiring the student to contact his or her instructor and schedule a conference immediately to discuss his/her attendance issues. Should the student accumulate two weeks’ worth of unexcused absences, he or she will be administratively withdrawn from class.

There are four forms of excused absences recognized by the institution:

  1. observance of religious holy days—The student should notify his or her instructor(s) not later than the 15th day of the semester concerning the specific date(s) that the student will be absent for any religious holy day(s);
  2. representing the College District at an official institutional function;
  3. high school dual credit students representing the independent school district at an official institutional function; and
  4. military service.

Other absences may be considered excused at the discretion of the faculty member with appropriate documentation.  A student enrolled in a developmental course is subject to College District-mandated attendance policies. Failure to attend developmental classes shall result in removal from the course as defined by the College District.

It is the student’s responsibility to officially drop a class he or she is no longer attending.  To officially drop a class the student must obtain the class withdrawal form from Enrollment Services, complete the class withdrawal form, secure the required signatures, and return the completed form to Enrollment Services. The last day to drop with a Q is according to the Academic Calendar.

Scholastic Integrity

Blinn College does not tolerate cheating, plagiarism, or any other act of dishonesty with regard to the course in which you are enrolled.  The following text defines the faculty member’s responsibility with regard to the scholastic integrity expectation for this and all courses at Blinn College.

It is the responsibility of faculty members to maintain scholastic integrity at the College District by refusing to tolerate any form of scholastic dishonesty.  Adequate control of test materials, strict supervision during testing, and other preventive measures should be utilized, as necessary, to prevent cheating or plagiarism.  If there is compelling evidence that a student is involved in cheating or plagiarism, the instructor should assume responsibility and address the infraction.  Likewise, any student accused of scholastic dishonesty is entitled to due process as outlined in Blinn College Board Policy FLB (Local).  The Scholastic Integrity Policy is located in the Blinn College Student Handbook. In a case of scholastic dishonesty, it is critical that written documentation be maintained at each level throughout the process.

Electronic Devices

Cellular telephones and beepers/pagers must be disengaged while the student is in the Blinn College Library or any classroom/lab, unless otherwise instructed. Any noncompliance with this policy shall be addressed in accordance with the College District civility policy (administrative policy).  This information is contained in Blinn College Board Policy FLB (Local).

Course Policies


Course Policies

Chemistry 1405 will cover chapters 1-15, and 19 of the text plus additional material presented in the lecture. This is a 4 credit hour course.  Completion of both the lecture and the lab is required to receive a single grade for 4 credit hours of work. 

Attendance is mandatory for successful completion of the class. Attendance will be taken to comply with financial aid requirements and Blinn College attendance policy.

Cell phones are to be turned off for both the lecture and the lab. 

All students are given an email account at registration.  I will use this account to communicate with you as needed.  Get in the habit of checking this account regularly.

There will be 5 major exams that may consist of both multiple choice and short answer questions.  The final is cumulative and entirely objective.

Attendance Policy Reminder:  Missing lecture, lab or both will count as one absence.  For classes that meet twice a week  two absences counts as one week's absence.  Students accumulating two week’s worth of absences (four unexcused absences) will be dropped.

Problem Resolution: If you have a complaint about your class, you should first request a conference with your instructor to try and resolve the problems or issues. If the problems or issues cannot be resolved at the instructor level, you should request a conference with the Department coordinator at lorraine.lindsay@blinn.edu.  If further action is needed, you may request a meeting with the Division Chair, Mr. Dwight Bohlmeyer, Science 241, dbohlmeyer@blinn.edu.

Eating and Drinking:  Eating and drinking are not allowed in classrooms or laboratories.
