An introduction to the fundamentals and principles of chemistry as related to man's culture and environment. Designed for liberal arts and non-science majors. Cannot be substituted for CHEM 1411.

Core Curriculum Statement

This is a Core Course in the 42-Hour Core Curriculum of Blinn College. As such, students will develop proficiency in the appropriate Intellectual Competencies, Exemplary Educational Objectives, and Perspectives.


  1. Recognize the symbols of the elements and distinguish between isotopes.
  2. Differentiate between nuclear fusion and fission reactions and write balanced nuclear equations. 
  3. Solve problems based on the concept of half-life. 
  4. Predict trends that occur within a group or across successive periods on the periodic table. 
  5. Identify the shapes of molecules and distinguish whether molecules are polar or non-polar. 
  6. Differentiate between intermolecular forces by strength and identify the intermolecular forces present in a collection of molecules. 
  7. Write balanced chemical equations and perform calculations based on those equations. 
  8. Differentiate between strong and weak acids and bases and calculate the pH of strong acid or base solutions. 
  9. Identify which reactants are being oxidized or reduced. 
  10. Differentiate between classes of organic compounds by functional group and name. 
  11. Describe the solution process and specify solution concentration numerically. 
  12. Describe relationships between the pressure, volume, temperature and number of moles of a gas and calculate changes in quantity when the pressure, volume or temperature of a gas is varied.

Course Requirements

Course Requirements:

Exams are a requirement.  There will be 4 exams worth 100 points each given about as indicated in the attached schedule.  Each of the exams will include all of the material covered through that stage of the course, i.e., all exams are comprehensive.  The lowest of the four exams will be replaced by final grade if the student makes better on final exam than the lowest grade. Format of the exams will vary.  Make up exams will be allowed in exceptional situations at my discretion, but only if taken before the graded exam is returned to the class.  The final exam is comprehensive worth 200 points. 


Laboratory Experiments are a requirement. The laboratory portion of this course counts for 25% of the total course grade.  We have 13 labs scheduled. You will be graded on your lab reports.  Pre lab reports will be due at the beginning of the lab period and post lab report will be due at the next laboratory period after the lab is completed.  Pre lab – 5 points, data/in lab – 10 points, post lab – 5 points. The lowest 3 lab grade will be dropped.  You will lose 5 points per class period for labs turned in late. There will be no makeup labs! Pre lab and post lab reports can be submitted for partial credit. Those who completed all 13 labs including lab reports will get 10 bonus points to their total lab grade. Due dates for labs will be available on e-campus calendar.

There will be 4 lab exams scheduled and worth 50 total points. Make up lab exams will be allowed in exceptional situations at my discretion, but only if taken before the graded exam is returned to the class. 


Quizzes are a requirement.  There will be a number of quizzes given during the year.  The format of the quizzes will be varied. The class participation quiz is mandatory. You will be called upon to present the most unclear material from the previous lecture. You will be graded on the completeness and accuracy of your presentation. There will be no make-up offered for quizzes. The lowest two quiz grades will be dropped (excluding mandatory quiz).


Online homework assignments are a requirement. Homework will be graded on the following criteria: 1. Homework completed by deadline; 2. The assignment is complete and 3. The correct answer.  The homework is worth 50 points. Check OWL regularly for homework deadlines. Do not ask your instructor about the homework deadlines. If you fail to submit your homework, you will receive a grade of zero for that section. You will receive a score for each chapter assignment.  No extensions for online homework.

Eye protection is a requirement.  Students are responsible for purchasing appropriate eye protection and wearing eye protection during laboratories.  Appropriate eye protection for this class will be safety goggles.



Criteria for Grading and Determining Final Grade

Grades will be posted on e-campus.  E-campus grade book is not an official grade book.

Formal grading will be based upon a point system as follows:

Four Major Exams            100 points each (400 total)

Quizzes                             100 points

Laboratory Work              200 points

Lab Exams                        50 points

Homework                        50 points

Comprehensive Final        200 points


Total                            1000 points


Extra credit                 50 points

Civility Statement

      Civility Notification Statement. If a student is asked to leave the classroom because of uncivil behavior, the student may not return to that class until he or she arranges a conference with the instructor; it is the student’s responsibility to arrange for this conference.

Attendance Policy

The College District believes that class attendance is essential for student success; therefore, students are required to promptly and regularly attend all their classes. A record of attendance will be maintained from the first day of classes and/or the first day the student’s name appears on the roster through final examinations. If a student has one week’s worth of unexcused absences during the semester, he or she will be sent an e-mail by the College District requiring the student to contact his or her instructor and schedule a conference immediately to discuss his/her attendance issues. Should the student accumulate two weeks’ worth of unexcused absences, he or she will be administratively withdrawn from class.

There are four forms of excused absences recognized by the institution:

  1. observance of religious holy days—The student should notify his or her instructor(s) not later than the 15th day of the semester concerning the specific date(s) that the student will be absent for any religious holy day(s);
  2. representing the College District at an official institutional function;
  3. high school dual credit students representing the independent school district at an official institutional function; and
  4. military service.

Other absences may be considered excused at the discretion of the faculty member with appropriate documentation.  A student enrolled in a developmental course is subject to College District-mandated attendance policies. Failure to attend developmental classes shall result in removal from the course as defined by the College District.

It is the student’s responsibility to officially drop a class he or she is no longer attending.  To officially drop a class the student must obtain the class withdrawal form from Enrollment Services, complete the class withdrawal form, secure the required signatures, and return the completed form to Enrollment Services. The last day to drop with a Q is according to the Academic Calendar.

Scholastic Integrity

Blinn College does not tolerate cheating, plagiarism, or any other act of dishonesty with regard to the course in which you are enrolled.  The following text defines the faculty member’s responsibility with regard to the scholastic integrity expectation for this and all courses at Blinn College.

It is the responsibility of faculty members to maintain scholastic integrity at the College District by refusing to tolerate any form of scholastic dishonesty.  Adequate control of test materials, strict supervision during testing, and other preventive measures should be utilized, as necessary, to prevent cheating or plagiarism.  If there is compelling evidence that a student is involved in cheating or plagiarism, the instructor should assume responsibility and address the infraction.  Likewise, any student accused of scholastic dishonesty is entitled to due process as outlined in Blinn College Board Policy FLB (Local).  The Scholastic Integrity Policy is located in the Blinn College Student Handbook. In a case of scholastic dishonesty, it is critical that written documentation be maintained at each level throughout the process.

Final Grade Appeal

If a student wishes to appeal a final grade in a course, Blinn College Board Policy FLDB (Local), Course Grade Complaints, outlines the timeline for the appeal and the four steps in the appeal.  This policy is located in the Blinn College Student Handbook.

Electronic Devices

Cellular telephones and beepers/pagers must be disengaged while the student is in the Blinn College Library or any classroom/lab, unless otherwise instructed. Any noncompliance with this policy shall be addressed in accordance with the College District civility policy (administrative policy).  This information is contained in Blinn College Board Policy FLB (Local).

Course Policies


Laboratory dress policy:  (1) Closed-toe shoes must be worn, (2) Clothing must cover the skin from the neck to below the knees, (3) Shirts must have sleeves; alternatively, a lab coat / apron may be worn, (4) Students are responsible for providing their own safety goggles

Unable to present to the laboratory with proper attire will cost you an unexcused absence plus a zero grade for the lab. To avoid such a situation please leave pair of goggles, apron, and pair of proper shoes in your vehicle or in your backpack. 

Electronic devices:  You are allowed to take electronic notes. If you use electronic devices for personal activities it will cost you -2 points from the total points. 

Cell phones:  Once instructor entered into the class room or the lab, students need to stow their cell phones in backpacks. Any cell phone activities in the class room will cost -2 points from the total points. 

Class interruption: Once instructor enters into the classroom students need to be quiet. If you like to say something or you have a question raise your hand. Then you will have an opportunity to talk. Otherwise any form of class interruptions will cost -2 points under any circumstances.

Personal Folder: Each student must maintain a personal folder to turn in all the material to be graded.  The folder should contain only the ungraded assignments. Make sure to write your name, class, and the section number in the front of the folder. 

Attendance Policy: Missing lecture, lab or both will count as one absence. 2 weeks of absences will count as 4 days and students who miss 2 weeks will be dropped from the class.

Problem Resolution: If you have a complaint about your class, you should first request a conference with your instructor to try and resolve the problems or issues. If the problems or issues cannot be resolved at the instructor level, you should request a conference with the Division Chair, Mr. Dwight Bohlmeyer, Science 241, [email protected].
