Description


A health-related work-based learning experience that enables the student to apply specialized occupational theory, skills, and concepts. Direct supervision is provided by the clinical professional. Clinical education is an unpaid learning experience.  Twelve clinical hours per week.

Credit:  two semester hours.

Co-requisites:  VNSG 1115 Disease Control and Prevention, VNSG 1122 Vocational Nursing Concepts, VNSG 1126 Gerontology, VNSG 1133 Growth and Development, VNSG 1136 Mental Health, VNSG 1216 Nutrition, VNSG 1227 Essentials of Medication Administration, VNSG 1323 Basic Nursing Skills and VNSG 1420 Anatomy and Physiology.

Course Requirements


A. Submission of required clinical paperwork as assigned such as comprehensive concept map for nursing care, assessment, and graphic flow sheet on each patient assignment.

B. Successful completion of clinical performance evaluation.

Outline or description of course content:

Clinical performance is the implementation and/or execution of any semester-related task or skill in the clinical setting (as taught in the classroom). It is correlation of nursing theory (classroom) with nursing practice (clinical), and includes the following areas of evaluation:

II.           Provider of Patient-Centered Care

III.          Patient Safety Advocate

IV.          Member of the Health Care Team

Clinical experience includes laboratory simulations, clinical conferences, and clinical experiences or any other facilities Blinn College nursing faculty deem necessary to meet course objectives.

Evaluation


Students in Semester 1, Clinical I must demonstrate progression toward satisfactorily meeting all Differential Essential Competencies of Graduates of Texas Nursing Programs Evidenced by Knowledge, Clinical Judgments, and Behaviors as adopted by the Texas Board of Nursing, October 2010.

EVALUATION KEY:

  • S = Satisfactory
  • N I= Needs Improvement
  • U = Unsatisfactory

GRADING SCALE:

  • 95 Total Possible Points are Available from the Differential Essential Competencies.
  • A minimum of 71 “satisfactory” areas are required to receive a grade of 75%.

 

  • Mid-Term Semester Grade:
    • 25 or more (less than 75%) areas marked as “Need Improvement” or violation of critical element requirements will result in the student being placed on a clinical contract.

 

  • Final Semester Grade:
    • Pass= Final calculated score of 75% or greater and fulfillment of critical element requirements.
    • Fail= Final calculated score of below 75% or violation of critical element requirements.

 

  • Critical Elements:
    • Are standards that are essential to the safety and welfare of the client receiving care. All critical elements are noted by a * next to the item.
    • Critical elements are addressed under “BLINN COLLEGE VOCATIONAL NURSING CLINICAL POLICY AND PERFORMANCE EVALUATION.”

 

  • One error:           Student will also receive verbal counseling with the director.
  • Two errors:         Student will also receive written counseling and a conference with the Director of the Program.
  • Three errors:      Student may also be dismissed from clinical class and will result in failure of clinical course.

Attendance Policy

Attendance Policy.  The College District believes that class attendance is essential for student success; therefore, students are required to promptly and regularly attend all their classes. A record of attendance will be maintained from the first day of classes and/or the first day the student’s name appears on the roster through final examinations. If a student has one week’s worth of unexcused absences during the semester, he or she will be sent an e-mail by the College District requiring the student to contact his or her instructor and schedule a conference immediately to discuss his/her attendance issues. Should the student accumulate two weeks’ worth of unexcused absences, he or she will be administratively withdrawn from class.

There are four forms of excused absences recognized by the institution:

  1. observance of religious holy days—The student should notify his or her instructor(s) not later than the 15th day of the semester concerning the specific date(s) that the student will be absent for any religious holy day(s);
  2. representing the College District at an official institutional function;
  3. high school dual credit students representing the independent school district at an official institutional function; and
  4. military service.

Other absences may be considered excused at the discretion of the faculty

member with appropriate documentation.  A student enrolled in a developmental course is subject to College District-mandated attendance policies. Failure to attend developmental classes shall result in removal from the course as defined by the College District.

It is the student’s responsibility to officially drop a class he or she is no longer attending.  To officially drop a class the student must obtain the class withdrawal form from Enrollment Services, complete the class withdrawal form, secure the required signatures, and return the completed form to Enrollment Services.  The last day to drop this semester with a Q is October 8, 2012.

Scholastic Integrity

Blinn College does not tolerate cheating, plagiarism, or any other act of dishonesty with regard to the course in which you are enrolled.  The following text defines the faculty member’s responsibility with regard to the scholastic integrity expectation for this and all courses at Blinn College.

Electronic Devices

Electronic Devices.  All the functions of all personal electronic devices designed for communication and/or entertainment (cell phones, pagers, beepers, iPods, and similar devices) must be turned off and kept out of sight in all College District classrooms and associated laboratories.  Any noncompliance with this policy shall be addressed in accordance with the College District civility policy (administrative policy).  This information is contained in Blinn College Board Policy FLB (Local).

Course Policies


Additional Instructor’s policies:

A.

Expectations for clinical experiences: students may be assigned to deliver care to individuals with communicable and/or infectious diseases. The student shall in all cases be expected to treat all clients with the same concern and dignity inherent in professional standards of care. Maintain HIPAA at all times.

B.

Attendance: refer to Vocational Nursing Handbook

C.

Late assignments: work turned in after the due date shall result in lowering of clinical grade.

D.

Student is expected to arrive to the clinical setting on time and prepared, and this will affect student’s clinical grade. Student is expected to document using correct spelling and correct medical terminology. Clinical records not turned in completed and/or by specified due date will affect student’s clinical grade.

E.

Clinical absence assignment: students are expected to be in clinical each day. If a student has a clinical absence he/she shall be required to submit written assignment that shall include:

 

1.

a concept map for the daily student assignment

 

2.

a written assignment that may meet any/all of the following criteria:

 

 

*is commensurate of the work required to complete the objectives of the clinical assignment;

 

 

*is designed in a question-answer form that requires the student to gain knowledge of the clinical objectives;

 

 

*is a research type paper activity so designed that a student gains knowledge of the clinical objectives

 

It is the responsibility of the student to get the clinical absence assignment from the faculty clinical instructor on the first day of the student’s return.  Clinical absence assignments shall be completed and handed in on assigned day. Additional time shall be granted at the discretion of the faculty. Failure to complete the written clinical absence assignment or failure to complete the assignment in an acceptable manner shall result in the lowering of the student’s clinical evaluation.

F.

Student papers:  utilize instructor constructive criticism/feedback, verbal/written, as a communication tool for improvement of clinical performance.

G.

Secretary’s Commission on Achieving Necessary Skills. SCANS is an attempt to help make courses more relevant to the needs of a modern work force. SCANS is divided into two types of skills: competencies and foundations. COURSE DESCRIPTION:  A method of instruction providing detailed education, training, and work-based experience, and direct patient/client care, generally at a clinical site.  Specific detailed learning objectives are developed for each course by the faculty.  On-site clinical instruction, supervision, evaluation, and placement is the responsibility of the college faculty.
