Description


Principles of structure and function of the human body. Anatomy and Physiology I is the first course in a two semester sequence which examines the systems of the human body using an integrated approach. The chemistry of life provides a foundation to investigate the major organ systems of the body. The areas of study include the structure and function of cells, histology, the physiological and anatomical aspects of support and movement systems and the nervous system.

Requisites

Prerequisites: BIOL 1406 with a grade of "C" or better or approval of the division chair on the relevant campus. CHEM 1407 or 1411 is recommended.

 

Core Curriculum Statement


This is a Core Course in the 42-Hour Core Curriculum of Blinn College. As such, students will develop proficiency in the appropriate Intellectual Competencies, Exemplary Educational Objectives, and Perspectives.

  9. Explain the sequence of events during muscle contraction and properly identify human muscles.
  10. Describe neural physiology and components of the central and peripheral nervous systems.

Course Requirements


All sections of this course regardless of location or modality will include:

  1. A minimum of three major exams
  2. A minimum of two laboratory exams
  3. A comprehensive final exam

Evaluation


The following are required components of a students grade:

  1. Major Exams: At least three major exams covering the lecture material evenly distributed throughout the semester.  Information from the laboratory experiments may be included on major exams. Major exams will account for at least 30% of the final grade.
  2. Laboratory Exams: At least two laboratory examinations on knowledge and skills acquired through laboratory activities, covering histological slides, models, dissections, and any other lab work deemed appropriate by the instructor. Laboratory  exams will account for at least 20% of the final grade.
  3. Minor Exams/Quizzes/Homework: Given at the discretion of the instructor.
    Additional Reports or projects: Assigned at the discretion of the instructor. These materials will account for approximately 10% of the final grade.
  4. Final Exam: Comprehensive exam covering the entire course. The final  exams will account for at least 20% of the final grade.

Attendance Policy

The College District believes that class attendance is essential for student success; therefore, students are required to promptly and regularly attend all their classes. A record of attendance will be maintained from the first day of classes and/or the first day the student’s name appears on the roster through final examinations. If a student has one week’s worth of unexcused absences during the semester, he or she will be sent an e-mail by the College District requiring the student to contact his or her instructor and schedule a conference immediately to discuss his/her attendance issues. Should the student accumulate two weeks’ worth of unexcused absences, he or she will be administratively withdrawn from class.

There are four forms of excused absences recognized by the institution:

  1. observance of religious holy days—The student should notify his or her instructor(s) not later than the 15th day of the semester concerning the specific date(s) that the student will be absent for any religious holy day(s);
  2. representing the College District at an official institutional function;
  3. high school dual credit students representing the independent school district at an official institutional function; and
  4. military service.

Other absences may be considered excused at the discretion of the faculty member with appropriate documentation.  A student enrolled in a developmental course is subject to College District-mandated attendance policies. Failure to attend developmental classes shall result in removal from the course as defined by the College District.

It is the student’s responsibility to officially drop a class he or she is no longer attending.  To officially drop a class the student must obtain the class withdrawal form from Enrollment Services, complete the class withdrawal form, secure the required signatures, and return the completed form to Enrollment Services. The last day to drop with a Q is according to the Academic Calendar.

Scholastic Integrity

Blinn College does not tolerate cheating, plagiarism, or any other act of dishonesty with regard to the course in which you are enrolled.  The following text defines the faculty member’s responsibility with regard to the scholastic integrity expectation for this and all courses at Blinn College.

Course Policies


 

Lecture Exams cover material presented in both lecture and lab, generally in a multiple choice, true/false, matching format. Exams will be taken in ecampus, in a proctored setting like Blinn’s Learning Center. If you miss a lecture exam or want to try to improve your grade on one exam, you can take an optional cumulative exam. See calendar below. If the grade on the cumulative is higher, it can replace your lowest test grade. If your cumulative exam grade is lower, it will not be used.

 

Lab practicals cover material presented in both lecture and lab, presented as slides, dissected specimens, models, test results, images, etc. You will take 4 lab practicals during our lab meetings. The lab practicals are multiple choice. I will provide you the answer sheets. Because we only meet 4 times during the semester, each lab meeting is vital!

 

Final Exam is cumulative, over the entire course content, Ch 1- 15 and all labs. Students will take the final in ecampus in a proctored setting like Blinn’s Learning Center. I suggest the Assess your Learning Outcomes at the end of each chapter as a study guide for final.

 

Classwork includes any assignments given in class, such as group work, quizzes, etc. The online components include required connect assignments and A&P Revealed assessments in connect.

 

  • My lecture notes are available in ecampus.blinn.edu under lessons, unit and chapter designation. From the ecampus course home page, you can access Tegrity, which has recordings of my lectures. Ecampus also contains lab reviews for each unit. For each chapter, ecampus has “what should I know” review questions over the material. I suggest reading a page or two, then answering the questions, then read some more and answer the questions. What should I know reviews are not turned in for credit. Office hours online are accessed in ecampus, communications, elluminate live on Monday 12-1

 

  • Some examples of classwork may be identifying specific structures in histology slides, showing me markings on bones, cat dissection, working in a group to match histology images with descriptions or put steps in order for a specific project. Work must be complete and have your name on it when turned in or you get no credit. Missed classwork cannot be made up. If you have an unexcused absence for that day your grade will be zero for the activity. If your absence is excused as described above or illness with acceptable documentation, the grade will remain blank in the grade book. Class work will also include worksheets you complete in lab meetings, and ecampus lab reviews you will complete prior to coming to lab. Ecampus lab reviews are completion grades. I run a report the day of lab to see who has completed the work, then manually enter grades in ecampus. Your grade will not update automatically when you access the lab review. You do not need to print the lab reviews or take pictures of them. Some students find it helpful to bring lab reviews to lab meetings to review.

    • Each chapter has optional assignments to review and also required assignments which have a firm deadline. From the connect web site, you can follow the link to LearnSmart, which is another type of review for the course material. Students have told me time and again that LearnSmart has really helped them process the material for the course. Some exam questions come directly from LearnSmart. 3% Bonus will be added to your grade from the average across all 15 chapters’ LearnSmart. LearnSmart for Ch 1-5 are due with Exam 1. Ch 6-9 are due with Exam 2. Ch 10-11 are due with Exam 3 and Ch 12-14 are due with Exam 4. Ch15 LearnSmart is due 12/5.

 

  • A&P Revealed is an online dissection and physiology review site accessed to the right of the connect assignment screen. Please use my Course Content code k2zVA for A&P1’s content edited to highlight your textbook’s information.  When in APR, use the green my button! For each module listed on the syllabus, you will complete a connect assessment for the APR Module. Some questions on exams and practicals come from APR.

Makeup Policy: Missed classwork is not made up. If you have an excused absence, the grade will not count against you. I must receive documentation for the excused absence the class period you return. Missed online work cannot be made up. Online exercises are open for an extended time. Your schedule should permit you to access the assessment during that time. Lecture exams can be made up by taking the cumulative exam at the end of the semester. The final exam cannot be made up. I do not accept late work that you did not turn in during class. To get credit, all work must be complete and have your name on it when turned in.

Health Concerns: Eating and drinking are not allowed during class or laboratory work.
